Winchester Late First Block

A recent purchase at a local auction and is a fairly good example of what was coming out toward the end of Winchester's first block. All of the parts are Winchester and match in wear and patina. It has the 9/16" left rear receiver detail, E379 op slide, and a late no bevel trigger housing with type 4 straight hammer. The front sight has a thumbnail mill mark. This example came with it's sling and oiler in tact. The oiler is an IS with serifs and is parked. Pictures forthcoming:

Its the part that holds the trigger housing lug dovetailed..the length of the leg

In my honest opinion, the entire carbine shows an external patina from being exposed to the elements. Fortunately there is no active rust or pitting. hth.

Mine is 200K lower, and has "aged" too..barrel is dulite, receiver zinc oxide, spring tube, type 2 hammer, type 3 recoil lug, type 2 stock, bull nose hand guard..Lyman front sight...I like yours too..

I haven't been able to find one of those for about thirty years around here...You get one almost as a gift. It just ain't right!

Do you think that hammer was replaced in the field?
I can't wait to see the inside for any markings on the stock bridge wall and the inner right shelf.

But are the band weld scars worn way down and very hard to see?

P.S. David, Is it a type III Flat Hammer or the later type IV? Any idea on production date?
If a Type III straight hammer.... Could it be original?

Hey guys. Thanks for the kind words. I literally have been looking under every rock to find nice original carbines. They have been extremely hard to find. Glad to finally have something additional to contribute to the board.

Charlie, the extractor is marked internally with a W. There is however a circular machine mark on top and the extractor appears to be in the white. My early 5.5 Winchester has the identical mark on it's extractor. The hammer is marked with a W on the left side. NL 336-8 shows the straight hammer (non M-2) to be a type 4. Riesch has it as a type 3. According the the NL, this style of hammer was reported from 118XXXX-1347990. Per same reference the SW safety was reported from 12537XX-1347990 with EW from 1331223-1335452.

The stock is internally marked with a W on the bridge. There are no markings on the right flat. regarding the band, the weld marks are very hard to see. I believe there are 3 very faint weld marks. The patina does not help matters. Heres a few more pics taken indoors with bright light vs the above outside photos.

Seriously, I wonder how may WWII vet's would tear up just seeing that! That carbine is just plan beautiful! Thanks for sharing the photos and the info. I would hope to one day find something so nice for my meger collection.

Charlie, see attached photo of the 5.5 Winchester. Most likely produced within 2 months of the 1.3. The extractor is in the white and has the same circular mill mark on top.

On all the original Winchester carbines I have seen, the band welds are very light and hard to see, they were all first ser. # block guns.

No camera here today, but same grind or clamping scar on the extractor on my 5,573,xxx and on a extra W marked Extractor in the parts cabinet.
Different (no mark/smoother) one on my 5,8.
