Savage Lend/Lease No.4 Mk.1 Enfield value?

Gents - I'm not very familiar with Enfield values, and am looking for some info.....

A local guy has a No.4 Mk.1 Rifle for sale, made by Savage and US Property marked. He says it's a lend/lease rifle, made in the US for "loaning" to the Brits, before we entered WWII. He also says it's in very good condition (I haven't seen it yet), his asking price is $500. Says he's clearing out some of his safe queens.

Is a rifle like this in "very good" condition worth $500? I'm interested in a good No.4 as a shooter, but if this is rare and more valuable than an English No.4 I might be interested in it. Anything special I should look for?

he´s right on the" Land Lease" and the price 0f $500 would be good for the rifle over here in Germany, if it has the "very good" Condition. Sadly i don´t know much about the prices at your side of the pond but over here you have to pay $630 for an good one.

With thanks to Advisory Panel member Lance, there's also a rare "all correct" 1942 No.4 Mk1*(T) Savage Sniper Rifle (less scope) (click here) .....

Lance's article, accompanied by a detailed 165 pic photo montage, speaks to this example as being one of approximately 3,400 Savage rifles converted by Holland and Holland and re-barreled with an Enfield 5 groove barrel, however, it was never fitted with a matching No.32 scope.

Everything helps, thank you! But it's not mine yet, I haven't even seen it. I'm just wondering if, for $500, it's one I should consider. I like nice milsurp rifles, but I'm not a "collector" by any means. I just like to own them and shoot them, but I'm not a collector of the rare and correct models.

I'm on the 'other side of the pond as well - but - from looking at GunBroker, forums etc. It looks to be about $100 overpriced.

There were 1.2 million of these Savage No4s manufactured so they are in fact the most numerous of all Enfield No4s, they do however seem to fetch a premium to SOME US collectors / shooters who like the "made in USA" label.

Interesting - thank you Alan! So a genuine Brit No.4 is actually the rarer model? Hmm. So there were more Brit soldiers carrying rifles marked US Property than there were Brit rifles? I never would have guessed that.

And I did see the prices on Gunbroker. Made me wonder.

Just as the British built very good fighter aircraft such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Tempest yet still used U.S. aircraft. Same for armor and a lot of other war implements. The simple answer is that while Britain was basically being bombed almost daily through the better part of the war which tended to put a crimp in production of badly needed war goods the U.S. and Canada were free from these interruptions of production. At the height of U.S. war time production it was well able to supplement the production capabilities of other allied countries.
As can be seen from the Enfield rifle's we have the British were more than able to design and build superior weapons. German bombing made producing enough of these weapons problematic.
After all if not for the British built Rolls Royce Merlin engine the Mustang would have been a mediocre aircraft at best.

But my basic question is - is $500US too much for one of these in "very good" condition? Or is that a fair price for a nice one?

Sorry got carried away :slap: . From what I,ve seen on line and in verious local shops it is on the high side.

I paid $550 Canadian for a supposedly unfired 1943 Savage a couple years ago. I say supposedly unfired because, who can prove it. It certainly looks mint though, and still has old cosmoline all over the barrel, under the wood. So, depending upon condition, $500 is not entirely out of the ballpark, but might be a bit high for the US market.

Looks like I need to put on my Haggling Shoes and go take a lookie.

If your looking for just a shooter give Brian Dick (BDL Ltd) a shout, am sure he will have something to suit your needs.

Is this rifle a #4* or a #4 without asterisk? If it has NO asterisk it is worth a premiun if in the condition it has been said to be in, as that version is rare and comes from only very early production. It will have the small thumblatch for releasing the bolthead on the right hand side of the receiver near the charger bridge same as the British made examples. If it is an asterisk model $500 seems pretty steep unless it is in VERY good shape, bordering on excellent actually.

IMHO, $500 is too high for a Savage No4 shooter. As a collector, I would pay that amount + for a few Savage rifles (1941 MkI, MkI/2, Chinese Lend Lease, or 0C00000), but as a shooter, I can find a Savage in good condition for under $400.

They ain't making them anymore. If it's a nice one, grab it.

Like I said, I haven't seen it, so I don't know about the year of mfg. or any asterisk. The seller claims it's very nice, and one of his safe queens he's clearing out. If I see it and it's got a nice walnut stock, I might cave in. I'm a sucker for walnut. I have two Swiss K31's with walnut stocks, I'd resisted the K31 urge until those came along.

It's worth whatever you're willing to pay for it. Who cares if you pay a bit over market price for it , it's not like your going to try and sell it for a profit.

Just about everyone still has the first enfield they ever bought. I doubt in 20 years time you'll be looking at it saying, "love this rifle, shame i over paid by $50 for it".

As a novice enfield collector, I started early last summer and members here have been most helpful.

I have found quite a few here in the northeast. My .02 is that is too much based on current market offerings

I was able to locate a 4c savage non star in vg condition for around 175 as I recall. That being said ymmv but you can find s nice 'shooter' for far less

just be advised. They are very addictive, to me there like tattoos you think you will only get one and then you find you have a bakers dozen !!!! Lol

The asking price of $500 for a lend/lease is to high. J&G Guns in Prescott, Arizona will sell one to you for $239. As for a rare rifle? The No.4MkI(T) built at the Shirley plant by Holland&Holland. You find one of these in the original transit case with the No.32 telescopic sight for $500 and you will have saved yourself from spending an additional $4000...:dancingbanana:

I sold one a couple of years ago that was new in the factory carton for $1500. If it's a "minty example, it's well worth $500. I've got one of the Turkish imports like J&G has left in stock. Mine were matching throughout and purchased off the top of Century Arms' pile and not the bottom like most of the ones J&G has. I sold 13 of them for $329 with no complaints.

Well, it's not like I have a burning desire for a No.4, I'd just like to have one. I'm not actively searching for one, this is just an opportunity that popped up. Most of the other's that pop up are beaters or Bubba'd. There's one floating around on the boards that someone painted gray. Bleh.

From what I've seen in my area, $500 is on the high side. I would think $300-$400 is more reasonable but I guess it depends on where you live and if the rifle is in super good condition.

500 seems high. If not import marked and in excellent condition maybe 400, if average and import marked 300. Bore should be clear and not dark for higher values, stock not refinished, and metal in original condition with finish not badly worn.

Certainly not because although Savage-Stevens made more No.4s than any other manufacturer (more than a quarter of them), there were three English factories and one Canadian also producing No.4s - to a grand total of about four million. Plus there were still many No.1s in use with the British Army, and they were all British built.
