I just found that I have a big problem.
I have had carbines piled in one corner and mags in a box put away. I counted 15 rd mags today and I have 1.5 mags per carbine. I know that is not enough. How many 15 rd mags for each carbine should I have? Is three a minimum or is that just a good start?
I don't want to think about the .2 slings and oilers per carbine. Maybe the answer is to sell carbines.
well with my ARs I like 10 mags per gun
I'm sure the armed services faced exactly the same problem. What did they decide?
Bubba, I have a few extra mags laying around... Maybe the solution is for you to ship me a few of those carbines and I will pair them up with the extra magazines. I promise to keep a 3 to one mag ratio.

Due to the fact that 15 rd surplus mags have been comming out of our ears until quite recently , so for about 70 years now , it has been knocked around by many experts that the US produced a box of mags ( 100 count) for every carbine. I have one unsealed complete case ( it was in a sealed bag. I then removed bag layers from the '80s , the 60s , and the 50s , till I came to a "V for victory " box of Union Hardwares. As I stared at it , the glue on the lid just poped and it raised up like in a Sci-fi movie. Ergo , it un-sealed itself. ) and about 2-3 dozen "user" 15 rd and a dozen or so 30 rd. , so that puts me at around 10 per carbine too.

Saiga AK: 13 mags
AR-15 SP1: 12-30 round, and 3-20 round Mags
VZ58: 10 mags
(2) M1 Carbines: 7-30 rounders, and about 25 or 30 -15 rounders
Seriously, years ago when I was doing gun shows a lot, there were some original "issue" packs of 5 fifteen round GI mags sealed in a package. I have read somewhere that typically they had one to three belt pouches, maybe a stock pouch, and one in the weapon. My dad said on Iwo, he had one in the carbine, a stock pouch and a belt pouch. He said if the Japs got to him and 75 rounds wasn't enough, he was in deep sh@t anyway!
5/15rnd 2/30rnd per carbine. Did I mention I only have one carbine. What have I been doing with my time?

I'd get out bid on something else and wouldn't sign off until I bought a few more mags. That always seem to ease the pain of being sniped on the other items.
Even my mail gal got to where she knew I had more mags being delivered. To be honest I'm not quite sure how many mags I own. Most are packed away, with only a dozen or so that I use for shooting.

I went to local gun show today and I bought three mags. Now I have 1.52 mags per carbine. I think think it will take a while to get to 10 to 1. P7 know anybody wanting to buy a few?
Gee I only have 2 M1 Carbines and already I have 8 mags for it!!!
If I see any when I am out, I will probably get more!!!

Probably about a billion carbine mags bought by the gov. No joke.
Between 15 and 30-round mags, I have 80+, which makes for 12ish per carbine. I seem to use the same four mags for shooting since I replaced the followers with ones that hold the bolt open when empty. The virgin mags stay that way.
After Roger started this thread I went and counted up. I keep 4 magazines in two pouches and one in the housing for each that I have. That's over 200 magazines.
Does it really matter how many you have per gun? I don't know about anyone else, but I can only carry one carbine at a time. :madsmile:
To me what matters is how many I can carry with or on me when I need to carry that one Carbine.
Jim, obviously you have not been reading the other gun forums on the internet. To be a REAL gun owner you have to have at least 20 guns with 100 loaded mags per gun that you have ready at a moment's notice to throw in the back of your truck (which is always loaded with all your survival gear). How else are you going to survive the attack of the zoomie tomatoes when the earthquakes hit Alaska and the USA is invaded by the Island of Grenada! :surrender:Quote:

How true... I have 3 of the 15s with both carbines. The other 20 15s are in a box in the safe. All the 30s, except one that I keep full of 110 JSP R-Ps on the shelf, are also in the safe. I try to keep about 500 rounds for each pistol and shotgun (12 Ga., 9mm and .44 Mag) and 1,000 rounds for each rifle (2,000 5.56 for the AR15 and AR-180, and 2,000 7.62x39 for the VZ58 and Saiga AK). The Carbine I only have about 1,200 rounds between the two carbines. I think I have about 3,000 rounds of .22 LR, and one 10-22.
For me the question is, how many magazines by contract were required for each carbine during production? From a collector's view, I have found original magazines for my Postal Meter and Underwood and from a poor memory, the number 8 sticks in my mind. I have also managed to find original oilers and slings. To me, original issue accessories are as important as the rifle. Interesting thread. Regards, Rick.

I haven't even seen an official list of all the subcontractors. That would be quite a collection.

I know contracts, but how many were issued with each weapon depended a lot on the location, type of unit, type of mission, and what was available.
Yes, there were standards, but once a unit gets into a combat zone, the standards were no longer required.
I have an IBM late contract that does not show magazines. My assumption is replacement contracts were growing because it was cheaper to get the magazines from the sub contractors. That would apply to late production only, but not sure.
Approx 760,000 30 round magazines were produced during 1966. That shows that 30 round magazines were in much smaller quantities than 15 round.
I was able to find the quantity of Rugg 15 round mags, which was approximately 313,000.
I am still trying to estimate the production of 30 round magazines in 1945 and 1946, but so far I can only estimate a few million.
Bill, if I am reading your post correctly, are you saying that 15-rd Rugg mags are "more rare" that 30-rd WWII mags? Wow, it would be interesting what other mags are "rarer" than some of us previously thought.
What is on the market has no direct connection to the amount produced. Back in the 1950's thru the 1980's several million 15 round magazines were released surplus. Circa 1985/86 I was a partner in one of the smallest releases of 28,000.
Not many 30 round were released because they were sent to other countries and were still in use to the end as they were not considered obsolete.
It is not safe to assume production numbers by what is on the surplus market.
It makes you wonder how they did it. A rifle and ammo to last a good (Combat T.V. show) skirmish must weigh a ton. I wonder where SGT. Saunders carried all those mags. LT. Hanley seemed to only have maybe 5=75 yet 1000 rounds later, well Hollywood what do we expect.
