Hi All,
I've ended up as the storesman for the Cold War reenacting unit I belong to (Recce Plt, 10 Para). One of the 'suggestions' made by the membership was to create a hand-out for the unit showing what webbing should and shouldn't be used, and what the various pieces look like. I'm having trouble locating pictures of an early canvas S.U.I.T. pouch. Does anyone have a picture or two of this that they'd be willing to let us use for an internal-only publication?

Left dated 1976
Right: early 90's, PLCE type material (probably also used for the SUSAT?)

If anyone has a Pattern 72 pouch (has an American style M16 ammunition pouch plastic clip on the front) I would love to buy or trade for it. :D
Never seen a CANVAS pouch for the S.U.I.T in GB. Was that a NZ thing only? (I would imagine that they possibly DO exist over here in a Private collection, or two!) I doubt wether it held a S.U.SA.T though, they were intended to stay mounted on the SA80 Rifle. Even when stored in the Armouries.
The S.U.I.T However, WAS intended to be dismounted & stored in the pouch when not in use. As it was considered more vulnerable in Service. They were stored seperately on a shelf in the armoury when returned to barracks.
The right pouch had a wrapping on it with the following info:

The material is the similar to the PLCE 90 webbing material although this is more of a olive green.
The pouch was sourced from within New Zealand and had an original NZ 1 Base Supply Battalion barcode sticker on it. We received it in May 1993 (23/05/93) After the L1A1 had been withdrawn from service !
Good to know these aren't SUSAT pouches. :)
I'll do a stock number check on it and see what comes up...........
Thanks for all the info as well as the NSN. I have photos of a pair of SUIT pouches similar to the one on the left in the photo above, but the NSN seems to be a bit different, and the one I own has no NSN visible at all. They're both hard to read, but what I can make out looks like 1247-99-1??-4?35.
On a related note, is there any sort of commercially available 'magic decoder ring' for obsolete NSNs? It would make steering the guys to the right stuff so much easier!

That part number xxxxxxxxxx-9272 above dropped off the VAOS list in the late 90's. Someone in the system here said that it looked like the little pouch for the little COLT sight that fitted onto the M-16's. Not that M-16's or the little COLT sights were a general issue here though
So far as I seem to recall, there were a couple of different types of SUIT pouches. I was made by a little Belgian supplier who later supplied L8 slings so their part number will differ slightly.
Good old ISO-group brings up the NSN for this pouch as:-
1240-99-964-9272 POUCH,SIGHTUNIT,INF
Unfortunately with them you only get a partial description, but in this case it there is enough detail to ID its intended purpose.
In fact I was just looking at the cover for my SUSAT sight and its of the same material/colour as this SUIT pouch.
The early NSN for the SUIT Pouch (left in the photo) is 1240-99-132-4135
You've totally lost me NZ. The pouch xxxxxxxxxx-9272 has fallen off the UK VAOS list but it was the pouch for sight V5/OS-5874A and not as you mistakenly put, 055874A. Nobody can identify the sight V5/OS5874A. But when we can, we'll have identified your heavy duty cotton weave pouch but we THINK that it's the little COLT sight
We did have a purge to replace the highly combustible/combustable nylon with cotton weave

I could be wrong NZ but as I said, I suspect that the pouch will relate to the SIGHT, V5 (not written, but it's the VAOS category for Optical sights)/OS (For optical stores category) followed by the old drawing number followed by A for assembly. It'd be interesting to know if NZ had any of the little Colt sights. I know you had the rifles because it was all NZ-Army AR15's and M16's we used during our first class trade test at the Far East Training Centre
