I've never seen one brush finished either
Something has been daubed on with a shaving brush. But a layer of some protection is better than no layer of protection
Tart job. Get it dirty then give us a report
Was suncorite black like that, or is it black paint?
Difficult to explain the correct sunkorite finish but look at an example of BDL's refinishing. This No5 looks like it's been painted with a shaving brush dipped in Valspar super gloss!
Sunkorite it a bit of a temperamental paint and has to be kept stirred to keep the particulates active and mixed but the after baking finish, it's a deep, black hard satin finish. Copied by many and many 'substitutes' but none (?) have succeeded

So I take it this is not good.
errrrrrrrr........., The paint finish on the No5 inquestion is cra........ er......, not good. But the genuine bead blast, phosphate, sunkorite, baked and oiled as practised by Brian is the Base Workshop standard to aim for.
Sorry for any confusion!
Interesting, is it a durable finish? It look like it is.
'So I take it this is not good'. - Given the variety of JC finishes, including things that look like house paint, I think you're plenty OK with this .... I suppose it depends on factors like perhaps you bought it for its 100% originality as an investment, or whether you wanted a nice shooter.
No not really. I bought this No5 some years back for a good price, knowing the finish was different to others I already owned. The feedback I received from this thread is what I was already thinking really, I just wanted to hear it from those more knowledgeable. I'm not at all upset, it is what it is.
Thanks to all for replying to my thread.
