Inglis Hi Power shoulder stock. Real, or memorex?

Picked up an Inglis style shoulder stock for the Hi-power today.

Believe it to be original, but has no markings on it.

Nice walnut wood, perfect inletting for the metal bits, and expertly done inlet wood reinforcements along the edge of the stock where the button and hinge are.

Did these ever get produced without the "typical" cartouches?

I've seen Chinese copies of Broomhandle stocks before, but this is head and shoulders above one of them in quality.

What pictures would be the best to post for ID?

Pics left, right, hardware, any markings, the butt cap open and closed and the side hardware for hanger. I think you will find the butts made by Canada were marked with C broad arrow without exception. The hardware may be marked JI also. Yes the copies are out there and they are fabulous in some cases. Just not worth what the originals are.

Too late to get good pics tonight. Will get some in good filtered sunlight tomorrow.

Even if it is a reproduction, it is a really nicely done one, and I didn't get hurt for 65 dollars.

Looks like a real one with all the markings sanded out or maybe a lunchbox special that never got marked?

They didn't do that. That hasn't been sanded either. The Canadian butts weren't an issue item so they remained in stores until the most of them were burned for firewood. The vast majority didn't even leave the factory. Just stayed in the back. The copies today are spot on. This one would give no shame to ownership. If a man had the stamps and the source for these, he could make a fortune.

So, who is making these up? All of the reproductions I have seen have been stamped, one of the things that threw me off on this one.

I live just south of Vancouver BC, perhaps someone there could check this one out in person.

Got a question about the Inglis Hi-powers and stocks. IIRC, very few Canadian bound Hi-powers were ever milled for the shoulder stock. Why were they being made at all in 1945?

Most of the slotted Hi-powers (Inglis) I saw were Chinese contract.

I've seen several in service myself. Less than a dozen though. Once in Gagetown an NCO brought one to me and asked what this was all about and he had one slotted but with the new slide and no tangent. I remember one in the Canadian Scottish regiment that had the slot filled in with weld. Same question there. No tangent sight. Others on another gun forum have also mentioned seeing them around. This is just four or five years ago!

I have such a beast, but no stock. It's also fixed sight.

Early Canadian military production, I guess.

How does the 1945 date factor into all of this, Hal O'Peridol?

1945....well most of the ones I have seen have been stamped with the 1945 date, I would guess there are some stocks out there with other dates, but I haven't seen any.

The reason I brought up the 1945 date is that I thought (didn't want to use the word ***-u-me) that by 1945 Inglis was no longer making slotted Hi-powers. It seemed to me the most slotted Hi-powers were made for the Chinese. If so, were stocks made for this contract and shipped off to China, or did the Chinese make up their own stocks?

Don't really know too much about the Inglis Hi-powers, going to have to learn.

One reason I am asking about the authenticity of this stock is that down here in the US, a stock has to be an original one to legally put on a Hi-power. Stupid laws, but we are stuck with them.

Do you have to PROVE it's original? How would they know? And the guns that went to China were complete. With hanger and all.

With the BATF down here, the proof is on the owner. If you have no proof, they WILL arrest you, and its a federal felony, with resultant 10 year jail term and subsequent loss of rights. And there are gun owners down here who would gladly turn you in, because "You're breaking the law, and it looks bad on all gun owners." Well that's the excuse, I think those same folks were the tattletales back in grade school.

I had a run in with such a person at the Washington Arms Collectors show in Pyuallup WA a couple years ago over my No4 Skeleton. It had been relief cut through both the receiver ring and the chamber, aand he kept insisting it was a short barreled rifle. He called the show security on me and I had to show them my ATF letter on the rifle.

Anyway, back to the stock......if original, I'll start looking for a slotted Hi-power, if not original, I'll turn it over for a modest profit and look for something else.

I would look at turning over the minor profit Hal. I was aware of the long reaching arm of the BATF and the shenanigans pulled by fellow gun guys, I'm just mot sure who's responsible for what in the US.

Well, I guess my gun Karma kicked in this week. Yesterday a friend called up and asked me if I knew where he could find an Inglis holster. Turns out he bought a slotted Inglis locally. I told him I have one, probably a reproduction. He said he wanted to buy it, and I quoted him a fair price that gave me a bit of profit.

2 hours later, I am looking at for sale ads on another gun forum, and found a Rashid stock and handguard for sale. I have needed one badly for about a year. Price for the rashid stock with shipping is just below what I sold the Hi-power stock for.

What do they say about "The Luck of the Irish"???

Exellent deal. Sometimes you get lucky to get out of these things.

I bought one of the repros from SARCO a few weeks ago. It was marked down to $68 for that month. The stock has "made in Canada" pressed into the wood but a modern "made in China" sticker covering that. The repro also has "S A LTD 1945" pressed into the wood.
The wood is stained in a dark brown . The workmanship is good.
From what I understand the real stocks do not have any markings at all.

That one doesn't look like a reproduction to me. I'd guess it's one from the factory sans the usual markings. I've had a dozen or so originals dated 1944 and 1945 and a few of the good quality reproductions. Some of the reproductions are definitely "spot on" but there's one problem. None of the ones I've seen were walnut. They're stained hardwood.

Took the stock to the HAC show today in Burnaby. Got it confirmed as an original stock. Missing markings were a subject of debate. Thanks for the help guys.

In case anyone reads this old thread, I weighed what I believe are two original Inglis wood holsters (based on known location back to about 1950 or so) and got 584 and 618 grams. I read the walnut is thought to be heavier than the Chinese wood.
Also I noticed many fakes have the markings laser etched into the wood rather than pressed with a tool.
Any comments?

Laser etching is "too perfect" if you know what I mean.
