Yep , chopped down cloth ammo belt from a M1917 or M1919 Browning machine gun. Funny , I was just talking about seeing these used before , and here's one.

Maybe just extra rounds
Because carbine ammo didn't come in bandoleers, these guys tried everything to have quick access. Additionally, the magazines may have been in short supply at this time. I can see some guy who has just had his carbine go "click" and want to have at least one round to shove into the chamber while he gets out a mew magazine.

Also the WW2 ammo came in boxes . The strippers are post WW2 inventions.

When my older brother was in Vietnam, he had a 1911 and a handmade belt that held 45 cartridges besides the extra magazines. He was an O-3 and ran a POL point for choppers on the Cambodian boarder. I must be getting old. The two guys in that pic look like kids!

Haha! How true! I had hair, a baby face that could shave every second or third day, and I weighed 174 lbs. (And I was almost 22 and married! I was called "dad" in basic. Everyone else was 17 and 18!)Quote:
