I would imagine that if the cartridge is even slightly too long
that soft nose is dragging against the front inside of the magazine and chewing it up. I noticed this when I first started reloading the carbine. The OAL must be short enough to give the round a lot of clearance from the front. Even slightly too long and they drag and don't feed well. The rounds are sluggish coming up and it really affects functioning.
I worked with a guy who was a Coastie
He told me that a very large bear (brown..grizzly) came onto their AO in Alaska and they jumped into a jeep and shot said bear with a couple of carbines killing it dead as a doornail. So yeah, it will kill a man....easily.
