Not carbine related but still outrageous. Here's a beat up poor condition, run of the mill M1 helmet with poor broken liner the guy is asking about $950 more than it's worth.

(I guess it just takes one mullet who hits the BIN button)

Those are asking,actually buy it now, prices. Hell, you can ask for anything. Getting it might be a problem.
Maybe we should say overpriced items that sold.

You know, we could not know the market and these prices are low. Maybe these prices are set for when the dollar crashes. Get ready for the $20.00 loaf of bread. Or $2.00/ round for hunting 30-06 ammo. No wait, that is already here.

When I see prices like that, I think of all the kit we had and let go of. Not so much the slings but the WW2 type M1 helmets. That was the type of helmet I was issued when I joined the army. Everything but the rayon headgear. We slowly destroyed them and exchanged them until they were all gone. The sad thing was I knew there was something special about them even then. They just didn't matter then. So I only have one left. Too bad.

Back to the M4 bayonet, It really does look like an original, based on the Bayonet collector site. still about twice what it should be. WW II stuff has gone through the year the last year or two. WW II re-enacting is growing astronomically. I have an original WW II Helmet and liner I picked up at an Army Navy store a few years back (6 or 7) for $25 with the camouflage net. Now they are selling for 10 times that in the condition of mine. My leather handled M4 bayonet I got awhile back with an original early, no bale, M8 sheath. I gave about $40 for it. I have my dad's belt, canteen and dressing pouch. I would hate to see what they would sell for.

Man, I would come back from those convoys and couldn't wait to get that damned steel pot off. I actually sent it home in my hold baggage with the cool marked up cover, and when it came home, I threw it in the trash. I just don't understand reenactors. Why not join up and get that out of your system.

'Cause when it's out of your system you still have several more years of it to go!

I did 35 years and still have my steel. That was after the change to kevlar too. It's never out of your system, I see the faces every night. Most of them friendly. Most of the re-enactors never served and would never serve.

Before I blow a gasket and say something that might get me suspended from posting, can you tell me why they would never serve?

Many re-enbactors don't want the military discipline. Some have served, such as a friend of mine. He was my roommate on my first tour overseas. Now he's an ammo tech. he's a reenactor for a couple of areas. Most of the ones I've talked too never served and live in a dream world. Why Jim?

In my Civil War re-enacting unit in Illinois, almost all of the guys are prior service (I have three active and four reserve). Several of the younger guys did tours in the sandbox, and the CO was an officer in Desert Shield/Desert storm. In the unit in California, only a couple were vets. On the flip side, of the few WWII re-enactors I know, only one served.

In the US, most men have some service of some sort. I'm in Canada. Most people don't even know someone with service. I think you guys think I'm slamming someone. That isn't so.

I have no problem with anyone who has never served. But I do have a problem with someone who says he will never serve.

So it seems to me that these people are pretenders. Want to be's.

They dress up and pretend they are something that they are not. Willing to let someone else go through the hardships and spill their blood so they can have the freedoms from it. Try putting some real bullets in those re-enactment guns, feel the anxiety, the fear, the loss of friends that is felt by servicemen and women around the world.

To me that is a disgrace. They disgrace themselves, their country, and their family’s by saying they "will never serve".

But I agree with that Jim...completely! Always felt that way. We called them would be's. Would-be-a-soldier-but-didn't-have-the-parts. If you want to dress like me then...be me!

I was almost 22, married, and had one kid when I enlisted in 1974. I had two more kids while I was in. When I got out of active duty in 1977, the service was NOT family friendly. 18 month unaccompanied tours were the norm in the Army, not the exception. I turned down a promotion to WO1 in CID, and he same in MI when I ETSed. If the service was as family supportive then as it is now, I would have stayed in. I actually like the service. I went directly into Law Enforcement (not really to different) and the reserves.

I was 17 when I enlisted in 74. Ours didn't care about the family either. I finally had to quit in 08. Halloween. What a release date.

I never served in the military and when asked to do re-enacting I felt very uncomfortable about it and chose not to. When I go to my military vehicle club meets I used to wear WWII uniform clothing that did not have any unit patches or rank on them and again because I felt uncomfortable about displaying the uniform and rank I did not earn. I earned sergeant stripes at work not the military. I wear blue jeans and a T-shirt to my MV meets now. There are some that could care less and portray themselves as all kinds of service members. I just couldn't. I know of a CHP officer who wears an Eagle Globe and Anchor pin on his uniform and he never served in any branch let alone the USMC. He did some law enforcement training with them and he felt that earned him the right to display the EGA. In conversation he will lead one on that he was in the Marine Corps. He is a poser!!! I felt that way then and I feel that way now more than ever because of my son, Jeff. Jeff earned that EGA and the right to call himself a United States Marine!!! I wish I would have served. I kick myself for not going in but instead of raising my right hand and saying I do, I slipped a ring on my finger and said I do! That didn't work out so hot :lol: In fact, I tried to enlist 10 years ago and went through all the testing and paperwork but the end result was they said I was too old! I was 40 at the time.

Now that my son Jeff is a US Marine MP I will live out my military life vicariously through him ;)

My gun club used to have a shoot every year for trophies. When we gathered I noticed everyone there was in full uniform of some sort except me, and I was the only serving member past or present. Strange...

Bill, I understand and appreciate your feelings. You have spent your life in uniform, however, and I do feel you have earned the right. Our law enforcement jobs can be just as fatal as military! If my nightmares are any indications, just as hard mentally, also!

On another note When re-enacting, I muse that the canvas "dog tent" I sleep in is no different than the ones I slept in in the Army (2 shelter halves.) The large crackers in the MREs taste about the same as the hard tack we eat e-enacting, too. It all feels "familiar"

What a thread. I kind-a see real feelings here. I never thought much about reenactors. History buffs, want-a-be's, could also be right.

I still remember the "Jimmy Carter Build Up". No wait, that was four years later.

I was a civi with the COE at the St. Louis base for my first couple years out of school. Was a fun experience working on the rivers. Was on the dredge boat Potter on the Mississippi in the summer of 98 iirc.
