Hello folks i need help identify a scope

Hi folks I am just stopping through to get help on verifing a scope I recieved from a family member. It has numbers all over the scope the main ones I reconize are( TEL STG. No32 MK.III ) under that is (O.S. 2039 A) and under that is ( AK&S No 22595 ) AND UNDER THAT .......1945.

The scope is in a metal box that the scope mount screws into. the box says (CASE,STG.TEL No8 MARK.l B.E LTD 1941. INSIDE IS A LABEL UNDER THE LID HAND WRITEN ON HOW TO ADJUST THE POSTION OF THE GRADUATED SCALE RINGS ON L1a1 teles.

The scope has a leather strap with 2 leather caps to cover the opticals.

Any idea what the value would be. It weighs a ton and the optics are crisp. This may go up forsale................

Just re-read your post, is the "TEL STG. No32 MK.III" crossed through? I'm curious as the Mk III was used as the basis for the Telescope, Straight Sighting L1A1, which is what the instructions under the lid refer to. Any chance you can add some photos of the markings?

Wasn't the L1A1 scope calibrated to the 7.62Nato catridge, whilst the MkIII for the ThreeOh
if so is a scope off a L42A1?

Either that or you have the scope tin off an L42A1 and the scope off a No.4T....both are are quiter valuable.

1971 L42A1 Enfield Sniper Rifle

The No. 32 scope was refurbished and the elevation drum modified for the ballistic characteristics of the 7.62mm cartridge. The modified version was re-named the "Telescope, Straight Sighting, L1A1"

If it is stamped as Number 32 Mark III, it should be a telescope for the Number 4 Mark 1(T) British Commonwealth sniping rifle off WW2 and Korea fame.

Welcome to the forum, you've picked a great way to start...

Awesome gift, a bit rare and worth money. Your scope is from a Lee Enfield No4 T sniper rifle, they sell on ebay about once a month between 1-2 thousand usa, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. With the mount and the tin they have sold for $2500. The odd thing is that a whole rifle with scope and tin will sell for the same amount, go figure. Go look on gunbroker.com under enfield, and then enfield sniper rifle, to see what they look like and sell for..
They do develop aging problems over time that should be repaired by a professional, so the sales prices are not automatic. Are the lenses clear to look through, with no mouldy or opaque areas, cracks or chips, and do the adjusting knobs move with a clicking feel? If they are still and don't want to move absolutely don't force them as it will break stuff inside. There are repair services available of needed and folks here can point you the right direction.


My suggestion? If it was a gift that connects you to history, such as a family member who served in WW2, don't sell it, you can never replace that stuff, instead go find a Lee Enfield that it fits onto that is missing its scope and get down to experiencing a bit of history for yourself at the target range with one of the finest sniper rifles ever made.

Peter, lol, you're 100% right, I retuned the sentence better.

I wouldn't quite agree that they cost a great deal to repair RJW. Providing that they only need small sundries like screws, grease and seals etc. during the repair they can be done quite cheaply and well under £100 is the norm in my limited experience. What they cost in Oz or the USA/Canada is another matter.

But whatever you do or don't do Hooks, if it's tight or gummed up DON'T FORCE ANYTHING!

I'll get some more pictures up tonight, but yes the couple numbers including the no32 mklll look like they were crossed out, but very legiable. No one in my family has ties to it, my father picked up the scope and he believes somewere he has the wooden crate that the rifle would had been in. Still haven cleaned ou the top of the old barn. He told me to do as I please as he gave all his guns and ammo to my siblings and me, he retired and my mother is next week. They sold their place and going to travel!

They are also sought after so get looking for that "somewhere"!

It sounds to me as though one of the siblings may have the rifle that this stuff pertains to. In which case, I'd try to reunite everything.

No one has the rifle my father said he never had it. These were barn finds from a demolition/ clearing job in the late 80's

These L1A1 scopes, along with the rifle they are attached to, didn't arrive on US shores until 1994 when they were released from British MoD stores and sold on the surplus market.

Husk, I am just relaying info. I know absolutely nothing about rifles. I am not a collector. I have a few shotguns for deer hunting. If its what you clearly say it is pop is wrong! I am not wanting to miss lead anyone,just looking to find out what I have. I have no need for it and it is for sale, I need a new boat motor and this may be the down payment. Please excuse my limited knowledge. Thank you for your info.

Can I suggest that you put it on 'that' auction site. Describe it fully and accurately with a few good pictures. No need to go overboard and it'll find it's own best price that might make you happy. List it under Lee Enfield - sniper and.............

Can I suggest that you DO NOT mention to your wife the fact that it's on that auction site because she'll be keeping an eye on it too and she'll want a good portion of the money. Good luck

I hope those pictures help. The drum on the side turns freely and clicks, the drum on top seems sticky so I didn't try it any harder. I would be willing to take offers if I may do so. If I am out of place to ask that sorry I will retract the offer of sale here. I do deal in ebay and have nearly 400 sales and purchases all with positive feedback. I have even sold Komatsu Track loaders on ebay just to give you size of auctions. Multiple trucks and boats! Thank you guys for all your help and quick school lesson in to antique arms.

Hooks, I would have made your add worldwide shipping you are missing out on a lot of people outside of the US. Specially with the US dollar at the moment it is very attractive. I know that a serious buyer would message you on Evilbay but there is still a lot of people who can't use Evilbay and miss what is available internationally. Anyway just my thoughts.

Making it U.S only instead of International. You can go back in and change this on Ebay, unless you are one of those that likes to buy from outside but refuse to sell outside.

He says in the text that he will ship world wide, and its already at 3 grand with 4 days to go,me thinks we're about to see a record spend for a no32.

Much rarer, it's a loose L1a1 scope! And someone probably has the rifle.

Looking for the scope and can for rifle No L3490X myself, was thinking of the one in question but at the end of the day it would be a miss match, and I would rather see rifle L32478 reunited with its scope.

Well guys and gals Ebay has kicked my auctions off for the fact these are assult rifle parts. I had nothing to do with it, it was out of my hands. They told me I could relist but the scope and transit chest would in other words have to be for a rifle unto this ones nature!'

People I have no idea what I HAVE (in value) and am in no way trying to get over on anyone. I had some people from here meassage me privately and make offers, thats the only reason I posted for sale locally. I could have easily threw it away in a pawn shop. But some kind hearted folks here told me what I had, so giving you people/persons the opertunity to add this piece of history to your collection because it means nothing to me! Now I have no idea how to make this easy.

I have no idea how to offer this to the rest of the world for sale and being able to ship it over sea's. I would have probably put it in a box and tried to UPS it.

Would it be right of me to post it here forsale by accepting open offers (as post your offer over $3000 )and in 48 hours the highest offer gets the scope! Is that legal for me to do here?

This scope was in the transit box a few decades back and found in a barn on a farm in Pg county that was bought by a developer and was being turned into a neighbor hood. A certian person was a demolition and excavation contrator, rumaged through the barn before bulldozing it and found this. The scope has been inside his home and transit case in his barns loft. I recieved the scope with limited knowledge and was told to do as I pleased with it, he told me the box was up in his barn and could have it if the animals and bugs didn't destroy it.
I come to this site for info and offer it up to the Vintage arms community. Please somebody tell me if I can do as I mentioned in a earlier paragraph about selling it here on a offer bases!

Again this is the scope, the rifle mount, leather optic cover with strap and the metal case. I also have the transit chest in what I would say very good shape!

Someone probably put in a false "complaint" (I won't speculate as to why!) and the ignorant twits at eBay rushed to withdraw your "assault rifle parts", as they love messing firearms people around if they can and wouldn't know an assault rifle from a BB gun if their lives depended on it.

Anyway, if you want to relist it, just do so with a big red notice in the description that your scope is not an "assault rifle part" and complies with "eBay listing policies". That usually shuts them up.

I think surpmil has hit the nail right on the head. I felt that there was the air of a dutch auction going on between this site and that auction site. What you have is highly desirable and will sell easily.

I would imagine that a hundred or so No32/L1A1 sights have been sold on ebay without let or hinderance and just sailed through the process. That this one failed is telling. Additionally, don't egg the story either. It's a relatively modern(?) L42 rifle scope and chest that hasn't been in the US that long relatively speaking so those that do know these things might be suspect. Just tell it as it is............

Take a tip Dutch and accept the withdrawal with good grace and let an ebayer who has experience with the auction site write the carefully worded description for both articles for you.

Don't be parochial either. If someone wants the chest in another country, then tell him to arrange shipping via UPS/TNT etc etc. It works. I've just done it, not 3 weeks ago for an L96 chest that went to Oz
