I put an advertisement on a canadian board looking for an m94 carbine sporter, someone sent me photos of a rifle they have....
it has a stepped profile barrel, the serial lies between
"low Serial # 39600 - High Serial # 53615)"
the gun itself is rough, missing front and rear sights.
im just wondering if the stepped profile barrel is a sign meaning that its not a true m94.

Compare the 106 pic detailed photo montage against yours and you'd see what's missing and what you'd need to find to restore it. :thup:

here is some more info on the gun, in a message from the seller:
"
Waffenfabrik Mauser-Oberndorf A/N 1900(Year made) Initials stamped on side of receiver are O.G.(OLOF Darling Gibson)This was the inspector who was an inspector from May 1, 1898 to March 31, 1902."
JMO, but judging by the discolored area where the rear sight would be it looks like a cut down M96 rifle to me.
thanks VH, if i knew the serial number, would that be a definite way to see if its an m94?
i can hunt in canada with an m94 thats got a 27" barrel, but i cannot legally own a 96 with a 27" barrel....silly law, but its the one in place.

I don't know anything bout Canadian Law but isn't it illegal to remove the serial number from a firearm? It is here in the Unsettled States. Whats the reason you can't have a 96 with a 27'' bbl but a 94 w/ 27'' bbl is legal? Thats definitely an M38 or M96 stock judging from the length of the finger grooves. The ser. no. will be stamped in the barrel channel of the stock where the knox form sits just ahead of the recoil lug recess, whether or not the stock is original to the rest of the gun is anybody's guess though.
the serial number isnt removed..... i dont think? do you see it scratched out?
im not sure about why the barrel length law exists.
I must've misunderstood your repy, no I don't see where it's been removed. Like Badger says, if you know the # you can likely find the answer to you're question in the MKL. However, I'm still convinced it's a cut down M96 or M38 by the lengths of the finger grooves, the discolored area where the rear sight would fit and the first barrel step.
X2 what Badger said. There are alot of fake M94's out there. I spend nearly two years finding the real deal here in Canada and then still had to rebarrel the carbine. Another great source of information is a book by Dana Jones "Crown Jewel The Mauser in Sweden". An excellent book and must have for anyone collecting or interesting in Swedish Mausers. FYI, it's also the most "correct" as far as information goes.

A note of encouragement, these little carbines really do shoot as well as all the claims say they do. Actually amazing that a 100 + year old rifle can out shoot many of the modern rifles!
