Hi All.
I Tivo'd a documentary about Combat Photographers on Iwo Jima and this image flashed up. The docu implied that this was a picture taken of a photog about to walk up Mount Seribachi.
That's not a WWII carbine, is it?

It is what it is. If it was Korea it probably would have a bayonet lug. The adjustable sight was known in the PTO in 1945, and I'm really not surprised to see a 30-rd 'hardback' mag. I wonder if it also has a happy switch?

Volcanic sand is black. Looks like typical lazy film maker. Lots of misidentified footage out there.

Look closely, I'm sure it has the bayonet lug. And isn't that the selector over the top of the bolt? I don't think it's light because we're looking into his coat. Someone enhance the photo and see...

The taper on the nose of that stock screams potbelly! If you look close you can see the rivets on the bayonet lug. It just blends so well.
The photo has been altered. Where is the front sight? Take a close look where the band supposed to go over the handguard. Whats missing? The the band. Look at what the soldier is wearing. Thats a field jacket. Its cold. No way you would be wearing that at Iwo Jima or Okinawa. Most likely he is in Korea.
Looks like it does have a bayo lug but the shiney spot that is above his hand is the end of the slide handle.
Not every inch of Iwo was covered in black sand! Watch the documentaries for this data. It could be morning and it was cool thus the jacket. The sling appears to go to the back of the barrel band. But............ Could be Okinowa or other, the film makers are often sloppy!

I thought that it looked funny. In the film maker's defense, they were talking about the photogs who climbed the mountain to witness the second flag raising. Perhaps that was the only photo of him that they had.
I did a quick scan of the rest of the footage and that was the only 30 round mag that I saw while there were plenty of other carbines shown.
I can definitely see the 3 rivets on the bayonet lug ... I think
Ruth (p. 580) writes that the first 30 round magazines were produced in early April 1945 - and they were sent to the various service boards stateside for evaluation.
If there was a bayo lug in the original picture, it has been erased.
The story is correct, Its about Bill Genaust , during ww2 . He was filming on Iwo Jima.(USMC) Look Him up Sgt. William Genaust, Only 3 reels of film came back. Good story

There is no type 3 band on that carbine. In fact there appears to be no band at all and there is no band spring on it to hold a band on in the first place. Even the hand guard appears to be wrong where it would meet the barrel band.
If I remember correctly, the M2 Carbine video I sent to Badger to have in the sticky is dated February 1945, and has 30 round hardbacks in it.
You guys can sure argue about nothing.
Knowing better, it looks like a crank handle by his hand! Late Gatling carbine?
The jacket appears to have knit cuffs, and collar not right for field jacket. Appears to be tanker style jacket.
Barrel band appears to be a Type II.

Thanks Johnny as that picture is much better. It is a type 2 barrel band on it and that piece above his hand is not a switch but the end of the slide. Most feel the first use of the M2 was on Okinawa and they all would have had the type 3 barrel bands on them. Inland by April 1945 was in full production of M2 carbines. But it still looks like there is no band spring. Got to be the way the photo was taken.
That's a potbelly for sure. Also if you look closely where the bayonet lug should be you see a grayed-out fuzzy image of it, including the rivets as said above. It's blurred out like the front sight. Can't say if the photo was just bad or deliberately altered, but I'd say Korea, also based on the field jacket.
I'm beginning to see the second shooter in the Kennedy assassination. Look right over the Carbine's barrel and you can distinctly see him.

The picture is just crummy enough to foster all kinds of reactions. As much as we all love to speculate on what is simply never going to be clear, some things are self-evident, like the fact that the carbine cannot remain functional without the band retaining spring. Some late stocks were thicker in that area which means the spring sat deeper in the wood, which is exactly what you see in the picture.
About the only things from the poor quality picture that one can say it that it's a carbine with a type 2 barrel band,low wood stock,type 3 adjustable rear sight,30 round magazine and has a standard magazine pouch on the stock for 15 round magazines. What is that pinned on his collar?
