1946 Russian M44

Guys,
I thought I would post some of my MosinNagants... since I posted my long rifle, next up is my Model 44. I was seriously looking for a WWII rifle, but most of them were picked over by the time I had $$. However, I was fortunate to luck into a real nice M44. The rifle was cleaned up... but not refinished in any way (by myself or the dealer).

Strangely, and by accident, I picked up a Russian 1946 M44 this morining at a local gun show. I had been looking for a Long Branch Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk.1 or 1*, but luck was not on my side...

I have to break my rifle down to record cartouches under the wood.
Aside from the wood, my rifle appears to be in real nice condition!
Do you plan on shooting yours??? You appear to have a real nice condition rifle also!!!

Thank you. My rifle's serial number is PG4351, and will be a shooter (I was going to take it to the range this morning, but I didn't get much sleep last night and shooting when my eyes are blurry is never good lol). I spotted it at a local gun show yesterday, picked it up and was explaining some features to my wife (she's a keeper) and she said "why not buy it?" (did I mention she is a keeper?). The seller didn't have a clue what he had, so I explained what I knew, (which isn't much, but I do not like screwing people out of money). After some gentle bargaining, I walked off with a fully matching 65-year old rifle - not bad for a Saturday morning lol. The rifle has not been refurbished and every single part is marked for the Izhevsk factory. The cleaning rod is in place. The shellac looks like it hasn't been monkeyed with and is in very good condition, and the only thing "off", besides some small dings (what do you expect on a 65-year old rifle??) is a small forend repair in the region of the bayonet tip when it is folded in (I have been informed that this is common as the bayonet tip could dig into the wood if it got knocked). The butt has been sliced (you can almost make it out in the photo) but that was done at the factory to save on wood (according to someone at the mosin forum at gunboards). Have you looked at the butt under the buttplate? Are there any markings there, whether stamped or in pencil?

Quick question - what kind of sling would be correct for a Russian 1946 M44? I have been looking at different places online, but I can't get a definitive answer.

Mr. Dad posted on one of my topics... and some slings... I haven't checked them out yet, but can tell you that I wouldn't put on what I have on my Mosin M91!!!:madsmile:
If I find an answer... I will let ya know! They kinds seem naked without cleaning rods or slings... but hey... at least we haven't lost the bayonets!! :)

Would not the standard 91/30 sling assembly be correct, or was there a separate variation? Had not really thought about it before.

Mine came with the standard 91/30 sling. There was a specific sling made for them however. It was a shortened, non-adjustable version of the 91/30 sling. A third sling, the one used on the PPS sub-machine guns was also used and I believe it is one of these that another poster created a link to.

I wanted to join the '46 M44 club, but mines a '44 Izhevsk, not matching. I have a 91/30 sling on mine that came from the supplier. I knew it wasn't correct. Mine was getting lonely and wanted to hang out with the young kids.:wave:

I was wondering if you would be interested in comparing cartouches and metal stamps on your rifle? I may pull the wood off mine to look at inspectors marks...

Could you post a closeup of your cleaning rod? I am curious on what it looks like. I have seen many "end tip" styles, and wonder what you have!:confused:
Have you pulled yours down for a comparison of inspector marks yet??

Whoops, sorry, have been busy. The tip on my cleaning rod is the bog-standard type, the same as all the 91/30s that have been flooding into the US. I did strip the rifle down for cleaning, but forgot to look for inspector's marks.

After reading this post I decided to look under the butplate on my M44. Its a 1944 dated Izhevsk, numbers matching, oil finished stock. It looks alot like spinecrackers. It was my third Nagant but it had a ton more marks than the previous ones. Even the stock is covered in stampings. Anyway I looked under the butplate and there are a couple of stampings and a pencil mark as well. From what i can tell is says either "688" or a character that might resemble "G88." The back of the butplate is completely, and i mean every square inch, in hunter orange paint? Weird? Any ideas on this?

Greetings everyone, I just discovered this site tonight looking for a good C&R site and I think I found one! Anyways, I have a pristine Izhevsk 1946 M44 that I would love to find out more about. All parts are stamped with the Izzy mark and all numbered parts appear to match. The bluing is near 100% as is the wood furniture. I'll take some pics tomorrow and let you guys check it out. I picked it up from my favorite local gun shop for a price that I thought was a little high for what Mosins usually go for. I haven't seen another one yet that looks as good so I might have gotten a winner. Its also a great shooter too! Like I said though, I'll post pics and let you guys decide.

Hey Midmichigun. Sorry for getting back so late, but I was in Oregon on Holiday. My M44 is a refurb and no two pieces have matching #'s. The barrel has a different # underneath than the receiver. The buttplate has no # except the electropencil. Same with the bolt. Very faintly penciled.
I'll start with the stock. It has the refurb mark on it and is laminate. I haven't seen another with this stock yet. I didn't re-finish it. Well I want to play, too! Here's my 1946 M44. Excellent shape, shiny bore, all matching, no stock markings other than usual inspection stamps. Note no re-furbish marks, though. looks like it has been refurbed to me. My 1943 dated has no refurb marks either but it has been reworked. I dont think many carry an original finish.

I, too, am now a new member of the '46 M44 club. Ironically, my rifle carries a S/N that is ~ 2500 before yours with the same alpha characters before it. Pretty cool!

I suppose I need to fill the gap with a 1946. 1944/1945/1947 in inventory. Nice rifles and a Blast to shoot. Pun intended.

Not sure if you refering to me. If so the 1945 is the only one of the lot I have fired and I have not fired it for accuracy assesment yet , just function and fireball.

Shot the 1944 M44 this weekend. The bolt is a bit stickey upon closing and I need to bench for accuracy but the fired brass looks good and shooting at dusk my friends liked the muzzle flash.
