There was in fact a special reverse slot screwdriver issued to Armourers called, if I remember, 'TOOL, removing, foresight screw, if you are lucky' But if you want the real truth, they were crap due to the fact that if the screw was anything over finger tight, then the shaft turned in the wooden handle. So bad were they that as apprentices, this was one of the first tools an Armourer made. Usually from a suitably sized tough Allen Key. I've still got my home made one, annealed, worked, hardened and tempered in the blacksmiths shop at Carlisle.
Called a 'grub screw' across the pond. New manufactured tools come up fairly often on Ebay, sometimes combined with firing pin removal tool. Easily made, as Peter notes, in my case with a Dremel Tool applied to an old screwdriver shaft.
Peter thanks for that. it just seems strange that the screw is far from standard, but nothing was issued at the least section level. still I should be thinking military logic here shouldnt I. So an armourer would be required to attend a zeroing range ?.

I just wondered if there was an issued tool for the job thats all as I have never seen one, or anything that resembles one, there even seems to be a lot of forsight adjusters on ebay but nothing for this job.Quote:

To make it a multitasking tool, if the shaft is the right diameter and a hole is drilled in the middle of the slot, it will work as an SVT-40 Tokarev front sight elevation adjusting tool. Many of you with L42's will find that this 'SCREW, securing, foresight' is now a standard 4BA allen bolt. We used to use allen bolts instead of the rubbish original screw simply because they were so useless. If the snipers or training staff didn't have the correct tool - which they didn't - then they'd just use any old pair of snipe nosed pliers or Leatherman tool which burred the screw up.
It's a special head because we don't want the oiks meddling with this sort of stuff. They can cause untold havoc fiddling with things.
Before I had a proper tool, long ago based on a tip from another forum, I purchased a 'valve stem removal tool' from an auto parts store. It's soft steel, but did loosen a grub screw from one of my Long Branches that I soaked with penetrating oil overnight.
I know that this is just a bit off subject - sort of - but I'm just trying to kick start a thread or two as things seem a bit slow lately.......
BUT, if anyone out there in Forumland has a No4 foresight protector that has a number stamped on the left side then what you have is a former Mk5 Sten Gun protector. It was put there to identify the Sten barrel to a particular gun in order for that gun to maintain its zero.
Many ex Indian No4's seem to have numbered foresight protectors taken off Mk5 Stens
Its a set screw for sure and possibly a grub screw (a blind set screw) but it isn't it's drive that defines it. Grub screws can have many types of drive. Hex (Allen) is very common and in my early days with a large blue computer company I used Bristow drive set screws. (Star shaped, a bit like a Torx drive.)Quote:
