Shoulder's developing a healthy bruising from the pounding I got yesterday, TGFI (thank god for ibuprofen)

Basically an M1 carbine shooter myself, my newly found M39 makes them out to be pea shooters, but it shoots great, as long as I grit my teeth. Any suggestions as to good recoil "pads" out there? Or do you "just get used to it" :eek:
Pull the rifle in TIGHT. And wear a few layers of clothing- pretend it's it's winter in Murmansk...
Get an M1 rifle instead. Then you have beauty and function and power all in one. No more beating.
Were you shooting a 91/30 or the M44? The M44 is the beast of Mosin beasts. You've got to shoot these things in an aggressive fighting stance, unless you enjoy beating yourself up.
Wish I could let you try out my Mauser 33/40 and the Lee Enfield No. 5 ....
Just can´t make out how thousands of servicemen managed without complaint.
Since I've been able to legally do so, I have always owned a rifle chambered in a full-sized, .30-something caliber. Including my M44-it ain't that bad!
I didn't get my first .22 until I was 38 years old. The only shotguns I've ever had have been in 12 ga. Every other gauge I ever shot belonged to someone else. My pistol is .45 ACP.

Recoil seems to be more a matter of perception than anything else. Proper shoulder placement will nullify all but the most extreme of rifle calibers. The Mosin-Nagant is far from extreme. My 15 (now 17) year old daughter has been carrying and shooting a 356 Winchester in a 94 Winchester lever action carbine in deer season and having no issues with recoil. Having fired both, the 91-30's recoil is less.
She fired it four times, handed it to my future son in law who outweighs her by a good 60lbs fired it once, gave himself a black eye and declined firing it a second time. He had only fired AR class rifles to that point.
I shot my 91-30 just wearing a t-shirt, no problems.
An M39 seems to average a bit more in weight than a 91-30, but as Aragorn notes above, if you are used to light recoiling weapons, the tendency is not to pull them in tightly enough. Once you've gotten used to the technique, then, yah, t-shirt is plenty enough protection. But it's easier to stay accurate with a little padding when shooting a considerable number of rounds. Bench shooting tends to aggravate the "light hold" syndrome. Shoot it standing for a while. Pulling in tight is much more natural when firing from the feet-es.
Just heard the same at my local club over the weekend. Was told that taking medication for diabetes thins the blood and can lead to bruising.
Thanks all. I guess seating the steel buttplate right over the bony greater tubercle rather than more medially into the muscle, while easier for me to sight, was not such a good idea.
I'm shooting the surplus AIM was selling which I understand to be a fairly "light" load. Where can I find "heavy" surplus (just to try :eek:)?
Worst bruising I ever saw was my dad many years ago firing a 10 gauge single shot goose gun with about a 30 inch barrel. Longest barrel I ever saw on a shotgun. He fired it twice and said that was enough. Gave it back to the guy he got it from. That evening, his shoulder was black in an area about 6 inches wide by about 10 inches high. He was hurting for weeks. Personally, I've never made the attempt. A lesson learned without personal experience.
Nice. Those single-shot break-open guns always seem to kick like a mule to me.
My A5 clone has a 30" barrel. It swings and points well, and is going to make a good claybuster once I get it dialed in...
OP asked about light and heavy ammo. I think he may be referencing light ball vs. heavy ball. This is a reference to bullet weight. Difference in perceived recoil is negligible, I think...
The light ball rounds are the 148 gr bullet weight and the heavy are the 180 gr. Big difference in the felt recoil from this rounds. The standard round used in the MN was the 148 gr light ball round. And as you know the butt needs to be in the pocket of the shoulder.

I have two 91/30's and an M44 and I love the recoil. It makes me proud to shoot it and I brag about it's power to my buddies. I clearly out-punches my shoulder compared to my P-14 and Turkish Mauser. The most painful thing I've shot is my dad's 60 yr old Browning 16 Gauge shotgun imported from Belgium. It has a hard buttplate and no store-bought pads will fit on it.
Know the feeling with my m44,m48,24/7,91/30. I uses a 1in PAST recall protection.
What model of Mosin Nagant do you have? Russian or Finnish. If it is a Finn, firing Russian ammunition it is understandable that you got "kicked" like that.
The reason for that is the fact that the Russian round fires a .311 cal. bullet, where-as the Finn uses a .308 cal. bullet.
Proper placement as well as an agressive stance is key to shooting the MN (you want to lean heavily into the rifle). Pretty sure they make aftermarket muzzle breaks for those if you're into that, because of the unusual stock shape recoil pads don't work very well in my experience. As far as shooting heavy ball out of them, I've done plenty of that, felt recoil is noticeably harder but the huge fireball that comes out of the muzzle with those is worth the pain :)
Some guys just throw a simple towel over their shoulder to prevent bruising and providerecoil dampening.
If you choose to fire one of those from prone or from the bench however, there is going to be pain no matter what you do.
No pain, no fun. That's what I always say. (kinda had ta been there to get this joke, sorry)
If you want a very surprising experience you should try a 577/450 Martini carbine in a rapid fire exercise. I use mine for target shooting at Cape Buffalo targets, wich is done by firing three shots in fifteen seconds at 75 meters and again three shots at twenty five meters, also in fifteen seconds.
That little carbine was designed for men with hair on their chests, and pushes back into a shoulder with a definate force.
In contrast, my Mosin is not much different from the Lee Enfield No.5 Mk.1.
My thumb hits me in my nose often when shooting from a bench.

Also look at the ammo you are shooting. Most shooters shoot the 147gr light ball. There is still some of the surplus 181gr Heavy Ball MG ammo out there. If there is two different layers of discoloration on the casing it might have been in a linked ammo belt. So even with the 1 inch recoil pad you will still get bruising.
I love shooting my 91/30. My son's M44? No thanks! That thing hurts. And, I have a great deal of padding :lol:

Unfortunately for some of us with bad shoulders shooting a powerful rifle is a painful experience. MJ you avatar looks familiar I believe we met on Survivors SKS board. If I had a choice I would have dropped the mosin and opted for a SMG. Personally my right shoulder has been messed up. The collar bone has been broken and dislocated three times so the first time I shot my Mosin it was the last time.

I have several of M-N's.
I shoot mine often and a bit of clothing and placing the buttplate into the muscle instead of the bone, makes it
no pain to shoot and enjoy!
One day, I decided to take all of the new kids I got out for a test run. I started by sighting in my competition AR. Then the Chinese SKS. Then 50 rounds out of my SMLE. Then 50 rounds out of my 1917 Enfield. When I got to the MN, five rounds was enough. I fired 10 rounds out of my Rem 700 in .300 WinMag. That actually felt better than the MN. I did get a nice bruise out of this ordeal, next time I'm shooting the MN first.
As others noted, pull the stock tight against the shoulder & use a firm "cheek weld" against the comb with your face. This allows you & the rifle to move as one mass and minimizes perceived recoil.
I shoot a lot of different rifles. You said you were shooting a M38 which has as much kick as an M44. Basicly the same rifle. The M95 Steyr straight pull has a much heavier kick to it, if you use the old Nazi ammo. My #5 Jungle rifle has a lot more kick as does the 7x57 Mauser carbine. There are others. But the worst one I have is a 30.06 Columbian Mauser I have that just hurts to shoot.
As for the kick from a 91/30 I can shoot them all day.
If you are laying down, it can be hard on your body.

May I suggest that you lay your thumb on the right side of the stock {for a right handed shooter,} instead of laying your thumb across the stock behind the Mosin's bolt. This method helps in eliminating a flinch. Shooting offhand.... by raising your strong hand elbow almost parallel with the ground creates a better shoulder pocket. I use a slip-on cheek pad from Brownells to get a better cheek weld for my original M91-30 sniper rifle. This cheek pad also helps negate the effects of recoil.Quote:

This is somewhat OT but for those who find the recoil of a Mosin Nagant objective try to imagine running 100 or so high brass shells through this beast in about 10-15 minutes during an ambush on some pesty doves that were roosting in the trees around the yard and dumping all over everything in sight. I paid for it the next couple days but have'nt had to get up at 4:00 am to wash the dove s#@t of the wife's car before she goes to work since.

I agree with the general consensus here that with any major battle rifle caliber, you must deal with some recoil. Most such rifles can be fired by firmly grasping the rifle and pulling it into the shoulder (a but more inboard from your burse). I also use the recoil pad sold at most sites as the MN recoil pad for about $12-$15 each (removing the steel recoil plate – I am not breaking heads with the steel so the pad feel good) and the Limbsaver (small) Slip-On Recoil Pad. The latter is a better pad. Just remember to put you body behind the rifle and hold it firmly (pad or no pad) and you can ride the beast anywhere you wish. I love Garands but the MN is a great rifle.
