L42A1 and Enforcer Numbers survey

I have decided to start a list of surviving L42 and Enforcer Rifle serial numbers, If people are willing I would be asking for, Rifle Number Including letter prefix, Telescope Number, Year date of conversion and Make (BSA, Maltby, Long Branch, Savage or Enfield). Feel free to P.M. me if you do not want details to be public at this stage. Hopefully a large database can be made before too many rifles are lost forever. I am only after the combinations of rifles and scopes, not just individual rifle number or scope numbers!

I'll toss the info on my L42A1 and Enforcer into the mix:thup:.

The Enforcer (serial number 547, Pecar #31268) came in through a Virginia dealer (since passed away) in 2002 (I think). It was shipped to the Northern Ireland Police on the 24th March 1977.

My L24A1's serial number (rifle and mount match) is 33389, scope number is 25497 and was imported into the US by Brian Dick :clap:. I was lucky enough to find all the bits and bobs along the way to complete the CES:cheers:. It was one of a batch of 11 converted on the 13th June 1972 and following completion it was sent to Donnington storage and distribution center

Am I missing something XL? Surely, we've already got all the serial numbers and conversion year available, you just need the scope number to attach to a particular rifle........ no.........?

Well a lot of rifles are listed as converted in 71 but some are marked 70, and converted in 76 but marked 75! so possibly we only have shipping dates not conversion dates! There are also serial numbers listed without letter prefixes, which could confuse matters! I know of two identical serial numbers but with different letter prefixes, so filling the gaps is important I think

Hello enfield folk, first post so here goes !

I have a couple of Enforcers with scopes, and I know where they are, they are in my gun safe, trouble is , I cant find my gun safe. My kids have chucked sixty tons of kiddy stuff on top of it. I will report back when I reach the guns !

Ok here we go :-

Enforcer 118 has Pecar scope No. 71167 (However the six could be an eight !) with RAHS.4(26mm)

Enforcer 267 has Pecar scope No. 89565 with RAHS.3 ( 1 inch)

Incidently rifle 267 has Enforcer mag No. 462 attached to it. So if any one has my mag No. 267 then I should like it back........ pleeease!

Similarly rifle no 462, if you are out there .

Interesting - This rifle was shipped to Manchester Police on 14th May 1974. (According to the Enfield Sales Ledgers).
I asked Manchester Police about their Enforcer rifles under the Freedom Of Information Act and their reply was that " no information was known or held" about this rifle.

For other ones they were able to give me some info - but - this one looks as if they had 'lost track of it'.

This rifle was one of about a dozen bought in by my gun club, Crown House Armoury in Cardiff in the late eighties or early nineties and as a penniless student I worked all summer weeding saplings in a nursery to pay for it !

I have L42a1 T33462 marked as a 1971 rifle which I think you are already aware of. It has scope 19459 which is a Cooke Troughton and Simms one.

I have Enforcer 228 marked as 1973 and it came with Pecar scope 97642 on RAHS4 rings though it was actualy a 1 inch tube. This scope on my rifle only went out to about 700yards. I think most of us know of the inherent failing in the Parker Hale mounts and rings. Failing is probably not correct as the the equipment did what it was designed to do. It was never meant to be a 1000 yard rig. Fortunate in having other pecar scopes and reticule inserts I found a pecar scope that would go out to a 1000 on the original mounts and without shimming. I have since sold of my 2 spare pecars and unfortunately 97642 was one of the spares. My comfort is that I do not believe that it was the matching scope for 228 and also that it has gone to a nice chap in Canada who has a few Enforcers and who in our communications increased my knowledge of the genre. Additionaly Enforcer 228 had magazine no 367 on it when I bought it. I very recently found out that one of my regular shooting colleagues has rifle no 367. Over the last 5 years or so we have both been at the range with neither of us realising. His No 367 and mine No 228 are both ex Derbyshire. Rifle and magazine are now reunited. If anyone out there has magazine No 228 I would be very interested.

I don't know about Enforcers but L42 magazines were only to be numbered when they were subject to hand or selective fitting. Otherwise, unnumbered if you or anyone out there ever wondered why some were and some weren't. I haven't ever seen it in writing for the L39 but assume that the same applies although they only came from Ordnance with the standard No4 magazine - Oh yes they did!

A couple of interesting rifles there -

228 was actually issued to Glasgow Police on 8th May 1974 - it was returned to Enfield some years later (maybe for an FTR ?) and was subsequently 're-issued' to Derbyshire Police on 19th Jan 1981

367 is shown in the Enfield Sales Ledger as being "For Collection" with no Police Force name shown but it is shown on the same Inspection Note number as other Derby Police Enforcers so the assumption is that it was indeed a Derbyshire Force rifle. It was collected on 14th September 1974

Probably an odd question, but does anyone know what the final L42 (as in last one converted) serial was?

I know where and the serial numbers of the last TWO in British Army service are. Always handy when someone tells you that they are still out there or for when you see one advertised as being one of them in a few years time

NOT including the 1980's batch of L42A1 which very little paperwork can be found, we can only really tell you the ones in the last batch, dispatched from Enfield to Donnington, due to the fact that any of the 1979 dated Rifles "could" be the last one! They were probably converted then stored at enfield until needed and then sent.
The last batch contained 6 rifles sent to Donnington on the 12th July 1979.

I posted this about a year ago, I think, but it doesn't hurt to try again - anyone come across Enforcer 392 in their travels? I know where the magazine is.

A bit more info for your records I have an L42A1 with a serial number F37997 the rifle is complete and all matching including the magazine, the scope is serial no 22072, the old number OS 2039A is barred out. It was part of a batch of 30 rifles with a conversion date of 01-07-71 that was sent to Donnington, both the rifle and the scope still have the Donnington "hang" tags attatched as it does not appear to have ever been issued.
I also have Enforcer serial number 158 with its origional scope that is serialed 73396 with 158 under the serial number. The magazine is number 290 and the rifle was sent to the Cambridge Police on the 28th of Augaust 1974.
This rifle has since been reworked by Parker Hale, I think as it was part of a batch that was fitted with a bull barrel and new T4 forend as part of a mod programme. They were eventually sold on as I know the RFD who bought 3 of them when they were first offered to the private market. I don't know if Parker Hale did the conversion as part of a government contract to upgrade the rifles but was then cancelled, but I did see one being used in a police drama series some time ago so I assume that they were intended for Police use.
If anyone is interested I will happily get some pictures up but I suspect that has already been done.
