M1 Garand Questions

Hi Guys, I posted my carbine so I figured it would be a good time to learn about my Garand as well. Can you guys let me know what you think and if it's a pretty good rifle. The few things I know (or more accurately, think I know) are the things I've done. The pic has a WRA bolt in it but I have an S-A1 bolt in it now. The other thing I did is change the oprod. A few guys spooked me because it originally had an SA uncut rod in it. I put this rod in the safe and purchased a WWII coded "cut" oprod. Everything else is WWII SA. I just told you all I know about this rifle.
Here's the pics. (I was told to distort the final 3 serial numbers.

Nice rifle! It has post war rear sights, and the stock looks like a HRA. Are there any cartouches on it, or a letter "P" stamped under the pistol grip? Barrel date? Thanks or showing us,

Barrel date is 12-44. P behind trigger guard

So, it's a 2 million or what? You have a shadow of a cartouche on the stock at the rear left under the reciever tail. The rest looks like standard stuff.

What's the "or what"? I guess I don't get the post.

He means the serial #, if that photo and the last 3 digits aren't Photoshopped it really devalues the receiver. Personally I've never agreed with distorting a firearm serial #, been a cop for 33 years, I have the proper paperwork, it seems some get very paranoid to show those things.

Also as for the uncut op rod, the value depends on the make and the control number, I have one (D35382-6 SA), someone with more technical experience can give you a better explanation, but the lower the number after the dash the more it's worth, but you only talking maybe $40-50 dollars. Please post if I'm way off base here.

Sorry, I should have remembered that.

VERY nice looking Garand, Mossy. Maybe someone who's current with prices can give you an approximate value if you can post photos of your bolt and op rod with numbers.

As far as posting serial numbers, I've never covered mine up and I've never heard of anyone ever having a problem, but I think it's up to the person's personal feelings.

Well, read my post. Is it two M or two C? I simply don't understand hiding your numbers. It's important for dating gun and parts. We've all shown numbers and nothing has happened.

Looks like a nice WWII era receiver, with various mixed parts, a nice looking "service grace" M1.

Browning, I read your post. Still don't get the 2 M or 2 C. Anyway, this is the receiver as I have no idea why I should hide the numbers. I've had a couple guys tell me it's a good idea. That's the only reason I hid them.

The reason (as handed down by internet folklore) is so that someone online doesn't see your full serial number, report the gun as stolen and then try to get the police to recover it from you and give it "back" to them. Kinda daft really, and I'm not sure anyone can point to a legitimate case where this has actually happened.

Thank you boatbod. I had no idea why this was practiced. I have proof of all my purchases so I guess it's a moot point to hide them. Now I have one less step to post pics.

It is practiced in all sorts of forums. It is pretty much the standard in musical instrument forums, for instance.

I've been a cop for years also and never have I seen this to be an issue. All that was done was Mossy Photo Shop copied the 0 M1 from the second line "CAL .30 M1" and pasted it over the back end of the serial number.

(Cop only four years here when I was a young 'un and had all I wanted of it in the Big City) :lol:

Yes, that's the internet folklore as boatbod said --

All you'd need to do is create a completely fake bill of sale from a fake person, or another real person who would go in with you on a scam to defraud a federal firearms purchase you didn't make, and then turn it in to your local PD to create a police report so they could investigate the claim. :lol:

Good work on the Photoshop Bill - I use Photoshop all the time and didn't pick up what I was seeing.

Now, we're so far from the original question...If you don't disclose the numbers (or what?) then we don't know when it was produced so we can't help you with anything. It was hard to tell whether it was a 2 hundred thousand or 2 million and that was the point. Big difference.

At this point in the whole thing, I wish I hadn't tried to confirm anything in the first place. Maybe I'll just let somebody else do it. I'm busy.

Looks like a Feb 1944 receiver. M1 Garand Dates of Manufacture (Born on Date) with a post war T105E1 rear sight and, possibly, a HRA stock; stock appears to have been lightly sanded & refinished. All in all, a typical Garand in very nice shape. I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the info Kirk. I do enjoy shooting it and have shot it in matches this past summer. I can tell it won't be my last.
