How to pronounce "Garand"?

Being a relative new-comer to Garands, I seem to have discovered yet another "raging controversy" among some Garand fanatics.

I put up a video and pronounced the name of the Rifle "Guh-rand" with emphasis on "rand" as I've heard it pronounced on nearly any gun show I've seen about it.

I got a comment from an irate person saying, "You are saying it wrong! You must pronounce it as Mr. Garand said his name" ... like "errand" but add a G to it.

I am fully aware from Julius Hatcher's book that this is how Mr. Garand's name was pronounced, but like I say, I've rarely heard the Garand rifle pronounced the same way.

So, what is the common view here? Did I just happen to stumble into a particularly cranky person on this issue, or is he right and is nearly everyone pronouncing it incorrectly?

Poe-ta-toe, pah-tah-toe, the main thing is you got one. I find myself saying it both ways for some reason, guess it depends on what mood I'm in. I think I'll just call it the "BIG STICK"for now on. Cheers.

It sounded like "gear-end" but he was noted as saying he just let folks call him Ger- rand as they always pronounced it that way. The rifles real name is M1936 but over the years it took his name on and stuck. Rick B

It's "real name" was:

United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1

It's called "tugging the chain of the pompous." And the name of the rifle is: U. S. Rifle Cal. .30 M1. Sez so on the receiver heels of my 3 iterations thereof.

I have plenty of documentation proving it was M1936 [ Model 1936 ] from Springfield armory just as many other U.S. Military weapons were for years. The Monikers came from nothing more than discussions..

You are a new collector and pretty harsh with your mouth on many of the forums. You have been kicked from a few and banned from others already. I suggest you tone it down just a tad and am surprised that you are a preacher and acting as you are on the net. Rick B

The rifle was called "M"[ followed ] by years so much they just started calling it U. S. Rifle Cal. .30 M1 and this was after two more large names. The original name was M1936 as was the M1903 Springfield and the M1919 Browning and the model 1918 Browning or BAR and so on. All of them have nick names but there military designation started as a Model and year. Rick B

Yes but the forums are and they have rules. They are not up for constant berating of members as you have tried on my G&G forum also and emailed me to try and get another member in trouble after you were banned from the CMP & Surplus rifles.. Now please get back to discussion without issues. Rick B

I'm sorry, but Yahoo Answers, is not, in my opinion, a reliable source.

If you would kindly supply documentation that the M1 was called the M1936 throughout its service history, I'd appreciate it.

I hope you understand, but I'm much more convinced that Julius Hatcher is a better source of information than you.

Just reading more in Hatcher, and can find little, to no, support for the M1936 theory. I'll look forward to your documentation.

I believe General Patton called it ''the best battle implement ever devised'', or words to that effet. My dad simply calls it the M1, and so does everyone else I know who carried one in service. I've heard it called by various names and pronounced different ways including pronouncing the G as a J. What difference does it really make anywho?

Based on comments made by Garand fanatics, it matters a lot how you pronounce it.

What is a M1903 or M1917 or M1911 or M1911A1, 1919 or the many others that the military gave there weapons. The other names all came after. But seeing you are new to collecting military weapons I am going to have to trust you on this one. Rick B
