canadian trying to find a decent M1 stock set

Hello all now to this forum and to shooting again after many years away.
After a very long search I was able to finally get my hands on a M1 very nice action good condition but some bad person put a horrid looking black synthetic stock on it so no metal fittings or even proper screws. Finding the gun at all up here is hard but to find a stock set I might as well be looking for the goose that lays the golden eggs, and not being in the states I cant order thru CMP as much as I would love to. would anyone know were I might start the search for a decent set at a price that wont break the bank?

Given that you are in Canada, shipping the rifle back and forth to Dean may not be that great for you. His stocks are very nice though. I have two of them on bedded match rifles.
If you watch both e-bay and gunbroker, acceptable stock sets come up quite often. This is especially true if you are not looking for a collector set (I assume you are not since you mention the CMP and they only sell new wood stock sets). You should also be able to order from Boyd's Replacement Stocks for M1 Garands which is who the CMP stock sets are made by. New hardware available from Creedmoore and others.

dupage sells nice stocks for 99 dollars unfinished 109 finnished . james river sells nice stocks with cartouche for 169

Also check out James River not sure if its manufacturing or armory. I bought 2 M1 stocks and they are the closest in color and the fit and finish is great.

I agree that getting one fitted would be best but shipping active weapon across is very much harder in this post 9-11 world also much more expensive, I would love a collector set but at this point anything to get it out of the plastic will be a good start. i have been watching Ebay and gun broker but find most that come up will not ship out of the lower 48 states. the same goes for dupage they will not accept orders out of the US.

I had not found boyds or james river but have sent off emails to both asking if they will ship to canada or not. hell at this rate i may need to beg somone in the states to go to cmp and buy one for me and ship it up lol

In my post I showed you DGR. You do not have to send them your rifle or parts to have it fitted.
He is using the same stocks others do, he is just doing fitting to them others dont

This isn't hard. Just "google" Boyds stocks. They will ship outside of US provided the merchandise value doesn't exceed $100USD. An unfinished M1 stock is now listed at $74.50 with front handgd $16.95 and rear handgd $14.95.

With patience you can still find good stocks on ebay for less than $100. I live in Canada and have gotten several nice ones this past year. Keep it under $100 though or you run the risk of running afoul of the export screening apparatus.

I dont know if sarco ships up there or not but they have stocks and parts. if u dont mind the 1/2" they added to stock I think the price is around 50 to 60 dollars i have 2 that are still short on my 7.62 garands the wood grain is pretty they are new with mt stamp on them

What Purple says is correct, keep it in two separate purchases. Buy the stock group followed by the upper and lower handguards.

I know James River was $148 for entire set no metal. I'm sure you could talk to them about splitting the purchase though their price is high compared to others. Though I just looked at mine and they are very nice indeed.

looked awhile ago sarco stock set 69 dollars. they are the 1/2" short ones they added piece to. The wood is really pretty. would be as good as james river except for 1/2" piece they added

Ive got a GI stock for the M1 that I have just started refinishing. Its a postwar stock with not alot of colector value, but would be great for a shooter rifle. It has a "P" in a circle on the grip and a DoD cartouch on the left side. Its a dark walnut stock and could have any finish you desire as I have not put it on yet!! I could also have a handguard set to match it. Let me know if you are interested in it and we can work something out.

for those that have done it from them how close in color match are they on different orders ??

They aren't too bad, it's better than trying to match up parts obtained separately from gun shows. And they're new. The only thing is, they won't have come from the exact same piece of walnut. Mdrim13 might have a good deal for you there. Unless you're bent on NEW wood.

if u get the unfinished color match would depend on finisher wouldnt it. i think most of the new stocks sold are boyds recontoured and finished both my james river & dupage stocks have boyds stamped in barrel channel.

yes mdrim13 made a great offer to help and i have sent him a PM just waiting to hear back from him.

for those interested I have now heard back from sarco, james river,dupage will not sip tp canada. dgr guns will but their exporter is crazy who is a "gun Dealer" says a stock is part of the frame or action and claims it needs an export licence and will cost an extra 400.00 and take 8 to 12 weeks before it could be shipped for the government paperwork. and garand guy hasnt replied to my email
so options for new wood keep shrinking lol

I don't know particulars about Canadian customs laws, but everything I've ever heard of for shipping, a stock is just a piece of wood.

exactly what i tried to tell them it is just the in the US as i understand it only parts that need a firearms permit to buy or sell are full weapons, ammo, frames - receivers or cylinders to stop unlicensed people from building a gun from parts but a stock is a stock not much use unless you have a working action
I hope his broker is just being either extra careful or i think most likely doesn't want to deal with smaller orders and this is his way to scare them away but it means one of the better quality stocks are unreachable in Canada unless i drive a few thousand miles to pick it up myself in Florida lol

Have you talked to Boyd's yet?

As I mentioned earlier, Boyds is the "easy button" on this one. Just keep the order total under $100USD. I've received 5 orders from them on this basis.

yep hoping I have a deal with mdrim13 for a original set but boyds looks to be about the only place for non americans to get new ones but still not sure where i will find the metal set. kind of a sad state of affairs but i do want to thank everyone on here who offered suggestions and help it was great to get so much assistance for a total newbie to the forum
I am sure i will be asking for more assistance in the future as i am coming to see that parts and even ammo could be difficult to lay hands on up here lol but i believe it is all worth it in the end.

The metal parts can be had right here on the WTB forum. Ammo's easy, I load all I want. I couldn't imagine doing it another way. You will want a quantity of matched brass, that is to say same headstamp for this rifle. They can be a bit picky about it for accuracy. Brass can be had though.

I had thought of loading my own but am very unsure how to proceed as i have never done reloading and from what i see on here i need had to find powder for these to be correct?

You should find someone that reloads to show you what's involved. There's actually quite a great deal to it. Not for the faint of heart. Lots of gear to buy. You can't get in ankle deep.
