SA Garand with in-operable safety

Hello- and thanks for taking time to read this. I just acquired my first Garand. Its a fromer CMP service grade rifle, SA manufacture with a 1,119,XXX serial number. its all SA with the exception of the trigger group which is Winchester.
question, what might be causing the safety to not move from "off" to "on" ?, it only moves a fraction, and comes to a hard stop.
am considering replacing the trigger group with SA part(s), if so, which type should i look for, type 2 ?

Firstly, be aware that the safety can only be activated when the hammer is cocked.
If I were you, I'd pop the trigger group out and work the parts in your hand. You should be able to see if something is binding up.

That was my first thought,you don't have it cocked. If the bolt is decocked the safety will not go on

hello, and thanks for your response(s). the safety will not budge with the hammer in either position. i've removed the trigger group, and don't see any immediate bind, it just won't move. next step is complete trigger group dis-assembly, but, i would appreciate any tips on what might be the issue, that is if anyone reading this has knowledge of a similar issue.

If there's nothing obvious, I would detail-strip the trigger group until only the safety is left attached to the housing. Work back from there, making sure it's operable at each step.

I am stumped,but I have a dumb question.Is it possible that it is a large pad housing that had a round safety installed?****Nevermind,that wouldn't cause this problem***

thanks guys, from photos i took, i'm told that the part number on my safety is not for an M1 garand, and is possibly from an M14. at any rate, the suggestion i take the group apart is my plan, i've ordered an SA safety, so, i'll take it apart and replace the safety all at once to see if thats the issue, by taing the current safety out of the equation.

The M1, M14 and M1A safeties are the same.

Photo shows a large pad Winchester trigger housing with a Winchester safety which will work in this trigger housing. The other photo shows a "round top" safety which will not work, only a slight movement. It really is difficult to find a very large pad in a trigger housing as collectors are alway on the search, could you post some photos ? what numbers are stamped on your safety ?

again, thanks for all help. this is my first garand, i'm more familiar with the thompson smg. one of my customers who owns garands looked at the attached photo, and told me it might be from an M14. have ordered SA safety C46015-9SA.

PS, i see there is a debate back and forth on whether MXR is an M14 part, or, a 5-6 million range SA garand part. either way, i'll wait til the SA C460.. safety arrives, and take my trigger group apart and replace to isolate the safety as the issue by changing it out.
if it is useful info, the trigger housing number is: 6528290-SA
the trigger guard is WRA, number 046025, beveled on edges.

No debate, the safeties are the same except the early flat top for SA (WRA used flat tops) and the rounded top. Either will work in the modified pad M1 and will work in the M14 and M1A trigger housings. The only caveat that comes to mind and if IIRC is the use of a rounded top in large pad (unmodified pad) trigger housing.

It would be nice to see your trigger group with the hammer forward.

the replacement safety C46016-9SA, did the trick, safety now functions! thanks again for all replys.

What was the difference, other than the number, between the one that worked and the one that didn't?
