I've been offered an I cut IR-IP stock with an S'G' / wheel cartouches. This is the first stock I have seen with no "dash" between the IR and IP. Also, the wheel appears more like a Winchester acceptance stamp than a Grand Rapids (see bomb's flame -- outline vs. individual horizontal flames). Please have a look and let me know what you think.

The markings look almost to good. What condition is the rest of the stock? The apostrophe's on mine are verticle, not slanted.

I have to agree. The stamping looks suspect to me and all the S'G' I've seen (albeit not many) have the apostrophe vertical as Jim stated. The books all show vertical as well.

Here is a real S'G' stamp that you can use as a reference. It's on a reworked stock. The OG is an indication of a reworked stock, but the S'G' is a real Saginaw stamp. Hope that helps.

Thanks, guys! This stock was being offered to me by another collector who I believe to be honest. I haven't told him yet. It would be great if there was a pinned thread that contained known good cartouches and examples of fakes. S'G's and IPs are uncommon and the one sanded and reworked S'G' stock I have was too difficult to make out the straight vs. slant apostrophes.
Well, the only issue with that is we have already given instruction to the counterfeit artist by posting the vertical vs slanted apostrophes. With every little tid-bit offered each succeeding counterfeit thereafter will have that correction. Pretty soon, the genuine and the counterfeit will be nearly one in the same and nobody will be able to tell the difference.
Here is a thought, if someone had a set of original and genuine stamps, would they be counterfeit once stamped on a stock? BTW, they are out there somewhere. I only hope they are in the hands of those on the side of good and not eeevil! ;)
There were other issues with it too. Lots of things to consider. Always suspect of a fresh stamp on a average used condition stock. Yeah there are great marked originals out there, but they are on nice original stocks. Hard to find. Rememer these things are working on 70 years old now. Most are going to show wear to some degree, hell they went through three wars and different overseas countries use. Look for wear or sand marks removing the original one. Position, size. Not a science, just research.
I did get a kick out of the ding over the boxed S'G'. Trying to age it?
Very few markings are precise, placed exactly where they should be or lined up. It is thrilling to have the barrel be on straight. These things were slapped together and designed to work, not look good.

Nice stock, and you prove a point not mentioned.
On yours, besides the - between the IR-IP, if you notice the tops & bottoms of the letters line up. Sure yours may have been stamped a tad unlevel, but no matter the letters line up. The ops do not. His appears to not have been a single stamp, but one with the IR then one with the IP. Shape of the letters. :yikes:
