Spingfield 1903...a little help please
-
The rifle is legitimate, if a little "long in the tooth". The only part I can see from your picture that is non-military is the buttplate. Correct barrel, the bolt (or at leastthe cocking piece) is from a later M1903A3.
-
mauser buttplate, 1917 upper band , 17 staking swivle on that band, 1903A3 cocking rod, if they didnt ruin the stock with the buttplate, and the bore is good, retail value is about 500.00
if the stock was cut or messed with. 250.00 maybe 300.00
-
The upper band is a M1903, but the lower band appears to be a M1917.
-
bayonet lug is a 1903. band is a 17...tomato. tomato..same is the same.

Image shack has a ton of pop ups and your settings may be on the high side. Try this; RIGHT click on the image, select save "picture as....". That will bring ups some choices, select "DESKTOP", then save at the bottom right. Then, go to your desktop and click on the picture and it will open it and you can zoom it etc.

so what would i need to do to get this gun back to (almost) original form?

high No. Springfield
Carsonlilly, It's a little hard to see the condition of the rifle in the pictures. However as long as the buttplate area has not been cutofff or otherwise modified all you would really need is a 1903 buttplate and proper screws, a milled 1903 lower band assembly and maybe a sling. This would make the rifle very presentable. Run a patch or 2 with some hoppes thru the bore and then examine it with a light or borelight. The parts are available at most gunshows or thru Ebay, Numrich gun parts Corp, Sarco etc. Get the headspace checked before firing. The stock looks to be a nice finger groove type and if not sanded or otherwise modified is a real joy. The 1903a3 bolt parts could also be replaced with 1903 parts. Nice find!!
