Why are there no pictures of the preserved bodies?
The heavily rusted mauser tells me there was wet soil. human body decomposition was advanced. pompeii was dry. . gary
Why are there no pictures of the dead? Respect for the fallen would be my answer.
Not necessarily, dry soil would dehydrate, wet clay encloses and stops air entering, like the peat bogs in Ireland and Scotland.
The moisture would still attack metal though.
Just reread the original article, Skeletal remains, and had another look at the pics, still an interesting article.
Very interesting article.
It is good to bring closure for the decendents of the fallen.
Makes one wonder just how much is still hidden, waiting to be uncovered as development continues on the old battle fields.
Thank you Bill for taking the time to post the article.

Too right.
The article said that there are still 165,000 Commonwealth war dead still undiscovered alone.
fascinating, i'm always interested in stories like this. My great-grandfather on mother's side was German Calvary and my great-grandfather on dad's side was a farrier sgt (Cdn) in WW1. Now I want to see "War Horse"

i'd like to add he took care of Colonel Robert Samuel McLaughlin's (precurser to GM Canada) horses prior to enlistment in WW1
Has nobody wondered what they did with the goat?????
The article said the goat was probably for fresh milk.
Am almost certain it must have been a Bavarian unit & they don´t drink milk (something to to do with their innards). Gunner would know as he´s from Bavaria (Gunner ... don´t tell them!)
