Sported 1911 Swiss--range report

Last year I bought several sported Swiss rifles--two 1911's and a K31. Granted, they do not look like much, but they are great shooters. These will never be re-mill'd, so I had no qualms about drilling and mounting a scope base on one of the 1911's.

I put a Bushnell 10x40 scope on it and zeroed it at 50 yards with 3 rounds of gp11

Then shot 5 rounds of GP11 at 100 yards. This was my first and best group but all of them were pretty good.

I shot 5 rounds of Hornady target ammo at 100 yards and got this:

I would like some kind of strap on cheek pad to assist in getting a consistent cheek weld. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been in touch with Peter and have ordered one.

With the offset scope arrangement, any of the array of strap-ons for the M-1 Garand would probably work. Or you can just go with the one from Swiss Products.

Thanks, Bruce. I thought about a Garand cheek pad, but decided to order one from Czechmauseritis.

Calfed, nice rifle, my "sporter" model looks nearly the same. I was really wanting to have the Rock Solid mount installed and have it bedded with Rock Solid's screws and pillars as well. I have a Zeiss Conquest that I pulled from another rifle that I sold that I had planned to use. I just posted in this section about ID help with my two Swiss rifles. If you wouldn't mind taking a look, you may have some ideas.

Calfed, I also have a few of these Bushnell 3200 Elites in 10x40 and love them. I've had one mounted to my Barrett M82A1CQ for a few years now with absolutely no trouble. I've been using Burris XTR rings with them. What has been your personal experience with them?

Ah, Rock Solid does not make a mount for the 96/11 or 1911 rifles. Only for the K31.
Swiss Products should have one into the market in a few months.

Diopter, thanks. I guess I was under the false impression that the receivers were the same. I've been to the Swiss Products page and they have nice items. I see that they have a K31 brake... would this also work on a 1911 or would any of the 7.62 brakes on the market be better?

Barrel diameters are different. Swiss products is thinking of making muzzle brakes for 96/11 and 1911 rifles. When is another story.

I saw your post regarding your sported 1911. I noticed that you are looking to remilitarize it. I think that would be a difficult proposition, at best. Original 1911 stocks are quite rare, in my experience. In addition, the 1911's came with a "barrel bushing" that fits around the end of the barrel behind the front sight and prevents the stock from pinching the barrel. These also are rare.

I think you could easily spend more remilitarizing your sporter than a nice condition 1911 would cost.

Over here, G11s don't bring more than about 150-200 Euros. Calfed is right, it does not make sense to try to "remilitarize" one unless you come across a dirt-cheap stock. The sleeve that keeps the barrel free-floating at the front is made of nickel silver, although for a replacement you could use just about any non-rusting thin walled tube of an appropriate size. But to fit it you have to remove the front sight assembly, which is why I had a really tricky hour cleaning the sleeve on my G96/11 when I bought it - it was clogged up with verdigris.

Considering the quality of manufacture and the accuracy, these appear to be seriousy undervalued rifles. However, the major drawback is that there is no readily available precision sight, and so a Swede upgraded with a Tunhedin sight or one of the frequently offered diopter backsights is a better proposition. The sight sets for the K31, for instance, cost more than a G11 in top condition. Replacement parts for Swiss rifles are very, very scarce.
