Some were direct DSC purchase guns and will have no Govt. inspection marks. I have three Commandos, all three marked differently. My 20xxx range gun has an Ordnance bomb marking on the upper left frame, my 39xxx range gun only has "P" proof marks on the upper left frame, back of the cylinder and underside of the barrel and my 47xxx range gun has nothing but the Colt factory markings. I'm still looking for a GHD inspected gun. What is your serial number range?
number 42698 any idea what year it would be
I believe your gun was made in 1944. It is not far from my late numbered gun and was probably a direct DSC purchase
I have a phosphated Colt 20686. Just a flaming bomb but seems to have been in British service as it is UK Ordnance marked. Any ideas as to the year or anything else I should know
Pictures or description of the markings? Does it have the British broad-arrow property mark? Military acceptance marks?
will do pics when I get a chance but me and cameras ain't the best of mates!
Both my 4" Commando # 135xx, and my 2" # 102xx have just the ordnance ball stamp.
Hang on to it the price of thes has really jumped in the last few years
Nice plane in your logo kikokat - Mustang? Can we see a bigger picture? Are the brown plastic grips the original wartime fitting as mine has wood that might be aftermarket
kikokat , I have # 1066X . It was in a lot ( so I've been told ) of 500 pistols that were to go to the military , but at the last minute transfered to the Treasury Dept / Secret Service / FBI type people . Was yours in that lot ?

Whoops , brain fart . That was my 2-inch Victory model that went to the Justice Dept. My 2-inch Colt ended up in Washington being carried by a military courier around DC . My Victory did the same duty , but on the civilian side . I wonder if they ever passed each other during then ? I also have a Colt 1903 that was issued to and carried by a military doctor in DC. He never could figure out why he had it as he was never going to shoot anyone , but orders were orders , so he carried it in a pocket in his briefcase / medical bag . It , too , could have passed by the other two during that time. Funny how they all ended up in Yuma.

kikokat, those are beautiful.
What branches of services might have used these? I didn't know that they were actually issued. I have DS that looks very much like the 2" Commando. It was made in 64 though and it has a rounded stock at the bottom, not squared like this. And it's blued. But otherwise there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference. Which is kind of neat. I wonder what kind of holsters would've been used for people carrying these?
