My understanding is that the U.S. issued Colt Hammerless .380 and .32 pistols to General Officers and to some bomber aircrew. The aircrew received them because .45 Colts were in short supply early on and their need for a sidearm wasn't as pressing as say paratroopers'.
Added thought: The U.S. O.S.S. also issued the Colts in both calibres. I don't know if those were marked 'US PROPERTY'.
This pistol came from a fairly famous general. So you are probably very correct.
Thanks.
Sometimes the obvious answer is also the best one! TiredIron's post just struck a funnybone.
If you don't mind me asking, what General Owned it?
Sorry I can't right now, there are many items involved, and the estate hasn't been settled.
Here's one purchased by a Colonel post WWII.

Man that is the best looking 03 pocket I have ever seen. Is that finish original.

Thank you. Yes sir, to the best of my knowledge.
Beautiful 1903, i have one but compared to yours she is a beater, but love shooting it.
The year model was something added by Collectors. Using the year model there are two Model 1903's and two Model 1908's. The pistol in this thread was the Colt Pocket Hammerless .32, as there was also a Colt Pocket Hammer in .38 Auto. Collectors named both of them the Model 1903.
