Can I beg a favour?
Can some lucky person who owns both a Bren and an SKS take a photograph of them together for me, side by side, profile view?
Many thanks,
NavyShooter

Sorry partner.... :(
I don't have either, or I'd snap you a bunch of pics....

Sounds like an interesting project ;)
Keep us posted if it comes to fruition...

I don't have both on hand, but I was at a shop earlier today that had a ZB26 and an SKS on hand, alas I had no camera.
As you likely know, the Bren is nearly identical to a ZB26, and both are substantially larger than any SKS.
Nope....no joy yet.
The idea I've got is to investigate the possibility of flipping an SKS upside down and building a BREN up around it.
Am I crazy?

I think you are nuts. Virtually zero similarity IMHO.
Here's a few side-by-side and some assorted Bren pics.
Many thanks....now to do some photoshopping!

Ok, first look from photoshop is in.
The SKS seems to fit within the required footprint.
But.
Major issues I can see off the bat.
1. Barrel is WAAAY too light in profile. Putting a cone on the end for a flash-hider would be a start, but a new barrel would almost be more worthwhile.
2. New breech-block carrier would have to be built, probably similar to that of the original bren.
3. It would be impossible to change the SKS Bolt to have straight down ejection, either the ejection port would have to move, or a new bolt would have to be built.
So, I think I'm basically done with the idea right there.
The need to re-barrel in order to get a proper barrel profile, plus building a new breech-block, plus a new breech-block carrier, means that I'm pretty much into building a new rifle from scratch.
If I'm going to do that, why would I build one around an SKS action, instead of just building a new SA only Bren????
So, I guess Stevo, you've helped me answer my question, and given me a reality check before I went and dumped a bunch-o-money on a hair-brained scheme.
Many thanks,
NavyShooter
(Anyone got some pics of a Lewis next to an SKS???? LOL)
NavyShooter instead of building a SAS this time iwill it be a SABren? Why not? After all, others have done it so why not tackle it and make a tutorial from it if you have both the interest, the time and the money? I'd even ask you for the permission to translate it too! :D
Some Guys Re-enacting French and Russian WW1 units at the Newville Great War Association site in Pennsylvania have built passable copies of the French Chauchat LMG using SKS actions.
