My neighbor wants to sell his Inland M1 , serial # 775,000. It has been in his family since right after WW2. It's pretty nice but the stock is ruined for collector value. Someone modded the oiler cutout. Would it be worth it to find a correct stock? Or just sell it as is? How hard is an early Inland stock to find?

Stock looks to be a late WWII, WRA.
I see some valuable parts.
Can you post pictures of some of the internals?
Trigger Housing and Bolt?
With the stock off, look on the left side of the receiver.
Is there a SG stamped on it?

Greg, That stock mod looks like a Chevy "Bow-Tie" :lol: - even I could probably get the sling on and off of that one! Good job on the pictures. Lots of good things on that carbine, but for some reason it appears to have the later hammer spring. I can't quite make out the date on the barrel. Is it 1943? If it were my neighbor, I would be making him an offer for it "as-is." - Bob
The barrel date is 7-43. Yes it's a nice one. The bore is bright and shiney. I'm just not in a buying period right now. He has this and a 800 Rd can of USGI Carbine ammo.

(Oops - I was thinking there were 40 boxes of ammo in there instead of 16 - should have said $400 instead of $1000.)
It's not easy to find the right stock for that Inland and it does deserve to be in one. How much is he asking for the carbine and the spam can? I don't know if even Frank could save that Winchester stock.
I listed the ammo a couple mos ago for $400 and no takers. That's about the price of new commercial ammo. I don't know about the rifle. It's hard to figure a price. The stock is not good for much but as you say a correct stock could be hard to find. Plus he doesn't want to look for 6 mos or more for a better stock. I imagine a good stock might raise the value but only the price of the stock? Any idea as to a value? He does want to sell it.
Would be very helpful if a Carbine Club Data sheet was filled out for this one.
Value? Hard to determine.
Someone sitting on a correct stock might jump for it. It looks to be original finish.
Sadly many are parted out and bring in more $$.

Usually morons who can't wait to find out how to remove/install the sling properly don't go to the trouble of destroying the stock neatly. It is actually possible to repair that area at least up to arsenal standards, but it of course can never be original again. Someone like Frank Derrico could put in some fairly-matching wood that would at least keep the stock with the carbine. Its an absurdity as-is.
I wanted the 800 round spam can to go with my 600 round can. It was a 5 1/2 hour round trip drive. Met Greg, his wife, their dog, and his neighbor. Nice group of people, very friendly. The wives talked flowers and us about the carbine. The stock is a pretty thrashed flat bottomed low wood. Recoil plate and screw Winchester, NPM buttplate. But the guns metal was very nice. Worth more then the $400-$500 talked about earlier. Even with having to put a couple hundred dollar stock on it. Yeah, it came home with the spam can.
