This may be the wrong place to post this, but here goes. I live about 45 minutes from the south store. I have been by it but never in it. My question is this. I do not belong to a CMP related shooting club, I have my own range, so am I allowed in to look over the rifles that they have? Plus, is it worth my drive to see. I love milsurp stuff, and frankly it is getting few and far between at recent gunshows. You see mostly junk nowadays. Just asking.
You can certainly stop in and look but you need to meet their qualifications to buy. They are easy to fulfill. For example, join the Garand Collectors Association for $25, that qualifies as club membership, or your state rifle and pistol association.
How do you apply for the Garand Collector's association? Do they have a website???

They had the forms at the North Store I believe you can join the GCA while you wait for your paperwork to clear.

To be honest, you will not find much in the way of 1903 Springfield items at the South Store...unless there are some older barreled receivers or drill rifles. HOWEVER...that being said....they may have new made barrels for 1903's and M1917 rifles. Of course, the surplus or match ammo that is available will fire in Springfields/1917s/M1s. I always enjoy visiting and looking through the M1s in the racks. You never really know what they will have on any given day/week or month. I currently own about 14 M1s...each hand picked by me at either the North or South store. You miught want to stock up on their reasonably priced surplus ammo. They used have a bunch, but it appears that the supply is getting low. Have fun!
I was really interested in the '03 rifles but I will make the trip to see a nice M1 anyday. I have two, might as well add to it. I load my own ammo, so I'm ok there. I don't shoot anything but cast loads though any of my rifles. I hate cleaning copper fouling out. A clean shooting cast bullet is easy on the barrel, and my shoulder. Plus it is super accurate. I'll post a pic of a group I shot last weekend with a new rifle of mine. I should be able to tighten it up a little toying with different loads. I will shoot 250 + rounds a trip and run a single patch through the bore and it looks brand new. Run a lightly oiled patch and put it back in the safe. It is a little tricky to get an M1 to cycle with cast though. My '03s love it.

I went to school at JSU, a few miles north of Anniston. From what I remember, you would need those rifles living under the freeway!!!!
Like you, I also live about 45 minutes from the South store, and am an 03 fan, and shoot cast. As was previously stated, 03 pickings are pretty slim right now. But, you never know what might turn up. I know for a fact that the CMP has crates full of 03s (seen them with my own eyes) waiting to be inspected and put up for sale. But, I don't know when that will be. But, regardless, definitely make the trip. Check their website for store hours though, because they are only open on certain days of the week.
