I just got an IWS topcover for my L1A1 parts kit. Here's the problem, the little latches that attach the AN/PVS-2 T&E unit to the slide on the top cover can't rotate far enough to securely engage the slide. Can these be adjusted and, if so, how?

I think that they can.............. As I remember them, if they are overturning and are being obstructed before they tighten up, you've got to take the thumbscrew/winder/lever part off the screw part and put it back one notch or flat rearwards so that it tightens the bolt before the lever binds. I'm saying this from memory now so forgive me if I'm wrong

If, like you say you have an IWS Top Cover/Mount and your trying to fit a AN/PVS-2 bracket STOP They are not interchangeable, the AN/PVS-2 mount will not fit the IWS bracket, no matter how much you try.
if you look closely at the front of the IWS mount there is a big square shaped lug. Now if you look at the front of the PVS-2 bracket you will see there is a crescent shape cutout.
Can you see the problem?
There are 4 ways to fix this problem.
1. Get a PVS-2 mount for the L1A1/FAL rifle
2. Get a IWS sight.
3. Modify the IWS mount to accept the PVS-2 bracket (in doing so devaluing an expensive piece of kit)
4. Try and find the very rare Australian mount. These are the only mounts that will accept both the IWS and AN/PVS-2 bracket.
Top: Australian Mount.

Er....... KtK......., I HAVE a zeroable/adjustable AN/PV mount (less the actual IIW AN/PV sight) on a bog standard L1A1 IIW body cover in my drawer at work!
Perhaps the zeroable brackets we had on our early AN/PV's were made for our L1A1 IIW top covers. Yes, it is fitted to the lower of the two covers shown above. Slide the lower (as shown above) bracket OFF and slide AN/PV bracket ON
Hi PtP, something isn't quite right then, maybe your bracket like you said is an early one. Any chance of some pics of it at some stage to check it out?
For the others, the problem is although you can slide both types of brackets onto the IWS mount the PVS2 bracket will not lock up correctly in the slots as it can't reach them because the square lug stops the PVS2 bracket moving forward enough to engage the grooves. Hence the two set of grooves on the Australian Model to overcome this problem.

OK, i'm puzzled then. The topcover I have is a dead ringer for the lower one in your photo, square block and all. I measured out where the screws are and where the notches are, they line up - the notch in the topcover is 7/16" in front of the square block & the rear cut out for the cylinder that engages the notch is 7/16 from the back of the T&E block. Not sure if this means the one I have is an early production model or not, but the points of engagement clearly line up.
The problem is the swing on the screw levers, they impact the topcover before the T&E unit fully locks up. It holds, but there's about 1/16" fore/aft movement. From their current start point, the levers only have a range of travel of about 70-80 degrees. If I were able to reposition the start point further back it would have a range of motion roughly double that, hence the original question.
Peter - to maybe jog your memory a bit, is the lever held to the screw by a transverse pin through the lever & screw? That's what it looks like, but you're the armourer!

Ohhh Bugger, sorry to miss-lead you I've just been trying out the IWS and PVS-2 Sights on the various mounts and I have it bullsed up ... The IWS won't lock properly on the PVS-2 Mount, not the other way round! D'ohhhhh. I'll crawl back under my rock.:banghead:

No worries from me either. You can imagine what it's like for me having seen and having armouries full of the stuff, trying to remember it all and where you've put it! But it makes the memory cells work overtime!
Back to the original question Longshoar........ Had a look at a couple today and it seems that (on ours.....) there are THREE flats on each of the rotating locking latches and you've got to align the most convenient flat on each latch consistent with its ability to rotate AND lock before you slide the mount onto the IWS cover rail. Have a look at yours

Just as a quick aside........ Is this dovetail arrangement a standard, as in STANAG or Picatinny, or just an early one off dreamed up by the manufacturer? There's also another wierd one-off narrow dovetail on the UK Accuracy International L96 sniper rifle. Not to mention the one-off on the L85/SA80 that noone can get their heads around
I believe I can now answer my own question of today on the FNFal forum concerning the Sarco STANAG adaptor. It is the IWS bracket pictured in this thread. $ 175.00. Is that a good price?

The only use for this Adapter is for it fit the IWS or PVS NVS Mounts. Personally I think the price is way over the top
If you hunt around on eBay you will stumble over one every now and then. It all depends on how much you NEED to have it.
Well, it's less than I paid, but mine appears to be brand new and never used. Probably won't get much use anyway as (unless you own a LOT of your own property - to the point the neighbors won't hear you) shooting after dark where I live is against the law.
Along the same lines though, NZL1A1Collector, I believe you posted a picture of an SLR with the IWS fitted and some sort of bipod. Any idea what sort of bipod that was? It doesn't look like an Aussie L2A1 or British L4. Was it off an L7?

It was an authorised modification in the UK Military, little known outside Northern Ireland. In fact it's so unusual that I haven't actually seen oine except in pictures. I've got a funny feeling that the picture might well be posed because a) it's daylight and b) the OG cover is on! (yes, I know that theres a light filter or a pinhole but it's more for zeroing in at 25 yards than observing!). If you are looking for a bipod Longshoar, it's worth bearing in mind that it's the same one as used on the US M-240. I think that Brian at BDL has or had some of the user handbooks for the sight mounted on the rifle set-up.

I have a funny feeling that you cut the top out of the 'bracket, bipod' and filed the inside parallel so that it would slide up, over the handguard caps. Then a hole was drilled through the bipod bracket to coincide with the hole in the handguard bracket and threaded on the right hand side. The threaded rivet on the right side of the handguard capo was drilled out, Lastly, a longer screw was put through the hole in the modified bipod bracket, left handguard, gas block right nadguard and screwed tight into the right side of the bipod bracket. But I could be wrong!
But clear pics by KtK will show all............ The next thing is to get a spare GPMG Bipod. Ouch......... that's going to be megga expensive!
Pete, When I modded these bipods myself. I simply used a long bolt that was the same thread as the handguard screw. This would go straight through the handguard threaded 'nut' & out through the other hole on the cut out bipod head. (Adaptor,bipod)
Also used to 'Modify' a change lever (Safety catch to the uninistiated!) & also cut down the trigger return plunger to allow more rearwards movement of the trig. To allow TRUE selective fire! With a 30 round LMG mag on & a Blank Fire attachment, you had a section 'Lmg' for exercises!
ALWAYS did this with an Aussie SLR in Brit service. (We had many of them) this was because an Aussie L1A1 did NOT have the change lever drilled thorugh for a retaining split pin. In the potential event of someone 'Official' coming along, it was a very simple matter to 'break' the Rifle open. Rotate & remove 'Modified' change lever, & slip in an unmodified issue one! He presto! it was instantly internaly' as issued!........;)
TOTALY unofficial & NEVER sanctioned in Briti service, but hey. When your with the Airborne, you could get away with quite a lot!..........;)

Basically I've done what tankhunter said except I have a machinist mate who kindly threaded the hole on the left hand side of the bracket, bipod. I used the long handguard screw for the L1A1 wood handguards to secure it all.
You need the following:-
L2A1 Bipod (1005-99-964-1258)
Adaptor, Bipod (1005-13-010-0631) (if this type isn't fitted, it has straight sides and needs to be modified)
Screw, Handguard (1005-99-960-2101) Long L1A1 Wood Handguard Screw

If you don't drill-out the thread in the right handguard, you won't be able to tighten up the bipod onto the handguard because the screw will only tighten into the handguard and not the bipod bracket.
Do you iknow the EMER number KtK? I've seen the ITDU papers but not the EMER drawings and authority
Only one part would require to be threaded, either the handguard OR the bipod head.
If just the handguard was threaded there would be a bit more articulation of the head (loose, hanging from the handguard screw) but the handguards would not be beyond repair.
To thread the bipod would require a tap that was not always held at unit level, If you were to leave the handguard threaded and plain drill the head, this modification could be done by any Armourer with a supplementary tool box (hand drill and hacksaw)
I'm not sure now but I THINK that the handguard screw thread was a 5mm metric thread. I always believed that the L1A1 was an anglicised FN-FAL until we got our hands on the Argentinian FAL's. (and FN MAG/L7's too). Then I realised that apart from some changes in design, where the design hadn't changed, most parts interchanged especially threads.
