Yard Sale Carrying Case Purchase

I found this at a yard sale on Saturday and didn't know for sure what it was at the time. I figured it was probably for the M1 Carbine but not sure. I have learned that it is for the M1 Carbine but don't know if it is a real one or a reproduction. It's in good shape other than the penmanship which I assume is a previous "owners" initials and last name. I can't explain the tiger striping in the photos. It may be my computer screen or the camera. If you don't see it, it's my computer screen.

Length is 41 1/2 inches.

I unfortunately don't have an M1 to put in it and don't foresee one in my near future.

Any thoughts? Is it real, should I leave the name alone or try to remove it. If removing, how? Was $10 a good deal?

Aging looks real. Many carbine guys hear I am sure you can get a definitave answer. I must say, you have a good eye. Looks like a good excuse to buy a carbine. They are a bit on the high side CMP auction only etc...

What's the name on the zipper? Make sure you look closely at the side too. It looks real and even if it's wasn't, you did okay. The TWEEDIES is awfully brilliant. That would be my only concern from a quick look at the pics.

The name on the zipper is "TALON" spelled vertically rather than horizontally.

Some questions on the length and the end so here are some photos of that. From what I can tell the fabric is the same in type and color. The stitching is the same on the end but starts where you can see on the photos.

I know nothing about these but from where I got it, I have no reason to believe it to be fake. I got a partial box of 7.33 carcano ammo off the same fellow. He was young, way too young to have these or know what they are (20's I'd guess), I'm thinking they were cleaning out an attic for the yard sale. It was all the military stuff he had.

It is not your screen, I see it too, and it does not alter if you slide the image across the screen.

It's Moiré patterning, the same effect as you observe if you look through the folds of lacy curtains or gauze. Just a coincidence that the spacing of the weave in the focussed image is almost the same as the pixle spacing in your camera. If you try the same photo at a slightly different range or magnification, it will disappear.

Thanks for the explanation, I was thinking it might be some sort of infrared camo pattern when I first saw it but that wouldn't make sense for WWII.

I hate sidetracking the topic but is that the same thing that happens when you take a photo of a television set screen?

I think its real. One big tip is the zipper, which is usually brass in the repos. Also, the color and weave of the canvas. Depending on what was used to make the red letters, it might be removable without bleaching out the canvas.

It looks like either a felt tip or ball point pen ink.

Yes! Interference between two fine rasters. It is also a problem with color newsprint (because of the dot rasters) that requires careful orientation of the color layers at different angles.

I'm not trying to hijack. I have a brass zipper one that I think is real. Upon posting pics someone posted one of a confirmed real one with brass zipper. Mine's a Shayne with brass TALON zipper. A comment was made that Shayne is more common and less likely to be repro.

Seems to be that you guys are indicating it looks real but do we have a consensus yet. It the zipper correct? Is the sling swivel correct? Why was it extended if it was extended and was it done when new or at some later date.

The case looks good to me. I only question such bold print of the Tweedies marking with the other wear of the case. Maybe someone tried to embellish it some?

I have some cases that were extended and will hold a Garand. They don't appear to have started out as a carbine case. The reason I say that is because the carbine case has the sewn on end piece at a certain spot. On the extended one the case is longer at the barrel end before the end piece went on. So I think it was designed to be longer from the get go. Not taking a carbine case, unstitching the shorter end piece and sewing on a longer one. Or it really had a different purpose all together but worked with a Garand so people use it that way.

The Tweedies looks unmolested to me. Edges are crisp and color is uniform.

Do you think this is one of the Garand cases then or could I use it for my 03A3? I haven't tried it because I didn't want to damage it but that is what I initially bought it for, hoping my 03A3 would fit in it.

A regular carbine case is 37 1/2" long. The entended ones I have are 47" inches long. I have never tried to put an 03 in one, mainly because I do not own an 03. I have a few Garands, and they do fit.

Measure your case and the item you want to put inside. That should let you know if it will fit.

Well at 41 1/2 inches, an 03a3 is one inch too long. Someone suggested a grenade launcher on the M1 Carbine. Would that be a possibility?

A Garand is 43.5" long and an 03A3 is 43.9" long. I would think it would fit. But as I said I don't have one and have never tried to put one in the extended case.

I have also not tried to put in a carbine with an M-8 installed.

Steve, referring to your first post....It looks good to my untrained eye. Don't damage it trying to shove in something other than what it was made for.
