My new Straight pull L1A1

Morning all,

I have just reassembled the finished L1, I think she looks stunning and can't wait to shoot her!

Re-built to Straight pull configuration by the Suffolk Gun Company with a barrel of their own manufacture, it's based on an Enfield made rifle of 1962 vintage.

Full matching numbers to lower, upper, bolt and carrier.

I have added the Hythe sight, L2A1 SUSAT and British wood, (very rare Fazakerley made for-end, can't find anyone else with one, anyone out there got another example of Faz wood work?)

BSA made butt, carry handle and pistol grip.

They have left the Gas plug and dial on the Gas block which I feel looks aesthetically better than some of the other straight pulls available.

All in all I am very pleased indeed, the conversion work has been vary carefully done with the absolute minimum of alterations to the rifle.

What a first rate company, top marks to the Suffolk Gun Company!

I will have to take a family pic of mine, Enfield made 1917 dated SMLE, Enfield made 1962 dated L1A1 and Spikes Tactical AR15 M4....spot the odd one out!

One of the nicest woodwork sets I've seen mr clark - v nice. On the suffolk website the receiver changes look far more intrusive than yours with a large silvery looking bit - why's that do you think?

I think the Rifles you are looking at are the Straight pull Fals that they also sell, if you let the slide show run on you will see the all black L1A1's at the end.

The Fal's are actually newly made Straight pulls from the Factory, while the L1's are converted original 50's/60's rifles.

Hate to be nosy but could I ask an approximate value on these straight pulls? They might be importable to Canada.

Dogone - don't ask, don't get ;) :D.

They are around £2,000 currently :) - but the problem would be finding one. Anglo Custom only imported maybe 30-40 of them converted, and most of them have probably gone to people like me who have them in the cabinet as a keeper. I've only seen one come up for sale again here in the last year or so.

If you could find one exporting it could be an issue, I don't know much about Canadian firearm laws but isn't it almost impossible for you guys to own C1's?
If so, would they recognise the legal status of a SP L1A1?

I love mine to bits though...starting to be a right L1 anorak, I am collecting different forends and optics for it for it, blank firing attachments coming soon.....sad I know

Hmmm, don't know about these, I have heard about some rifles with horrible modified charging handle arrangement, the pics just aren't good enough to see...perhaps there is a reason for that!!

I saw a converted straight pull L1A1 yesterday that had a cocking handle that looked like something out of star wars......... Well, not exactly star wars - but it was like an MG42 cocking handle on the right hand side. I asked the reason on the pretext that I was looking to buy a straight pull variant. I was told that it assisted the primary unlocking and......... and............. You know the sort of pure guff that they seem to spout.............!

If it was primary extraction he was on about, then fair one but primary extraction, such as it is on an L1A1 takes place during the lifting of the bolt.

Those are the ones. I really don't know why they have been built like that, they look absolutely horrible, and it wasn't necessary. As far as I am aware all the straight pull L1A1's are chambered in .308, and providing .308 ammunition is used and not 7.62, they extract fine (I did put about 40 rounds in four minutes through mine once on a really hot day and had to do the old trick of stand it on its butt and lean on the cocking lever, but that's the only time mine has had extraction issues). Talk about solving a problem that doesn't exist..........

I know mine (one of the original LuxDefTec/Anglo Custom Rifles ones) is a bitsa, the dummy gas block etc is a giveaway, but at least it looks authentic enough at first glance without a dirty great handle on the right hand side :(.

By the way, where did you see it - at the Phoenix?

Phoenix, yes! It's a bit like the supposed primary extraction 'lever' set-up on the now obsolete Cadet SA80's. We told them repeatedly that you cannot have primary extraction with a rotating bolt. It must operate when the weapon is being unlocked.............. Oh, don't get me going!

Pete, These are put together by Tony Buckland in Norwich. (A.R.Buckland & Son)

They both come from the the Bucklands the Norfolk gunsmith, but £400 diff in price buys me a nice scope as well. Cant wait to see it
