M1 carbine puzzle ??? help needed

I pic the carbine up not to long ago. & looking for info on it. Could this be part of a Prototype Sniperscope . War baybe page 235 . Not much info on it. I also have some pics on the CMP forum. Hope some one can help here. Receiver drilled & taped & also receiver was milled on the top & bottom were it was drilled & tape. ???. NPM carbine with a SA M2 stock. Stock also has a .U. rebuilding stamp . Hand guard is Inland 4 rivets. Will put more pics up. Lots of parts were chaged to Inland parts in the rebuilding. Thanks for any help.

There is still a lot of dry grease on the barrel, barrel band & the trigger housing safety & mag catch. This gun looks like it has not been fired in a very long time. very dirty.

My thoughts, and I have nothing else is, if it went through a rebuild shown by the .U., any damage to the stock would have been removed and discarded if done before then. Therefore the work to the stock and most likely the receiver was done after rebuild. The location of the of the handguard cut out looks like the picture but in a different location. SA would be the only enity doing any research after the rebuild contracts and it would have to be done before the M3 was adopted.
The clamp on the HG looks to be of good quality and not a Bubba job, like my father "Big Bubba" would do. Not having the dates of Underwoods rebuild program and when the M-3 were adopted off the top of my head, I don't know. If the M-3 was adopted before Underwoods rebuild program, it is a bubba job. If not, more research is due. If I was a betting man, I would not bet on this one.

I think you are right, that it is from he sniper scope program. The clamp in the picture has the bracket on the left side, so the clamp needs to be flipped to the left. As dfot different position on the wood, that is not really a disqualifier. In shop programs and one-off programs, that distance would be played with fror optimal balance. great find!

Imarangemaster tanks for pointing the band out. I could have put it on the wrong way after takingthe gun aparts. Looks better on the left side . I also notist on the bottom of the stock behind the plate there is marking of the head of the screws that were there. More pics. Would be nice to get more info on what the scope mount as on the side of the receiver.

What you have is a stock that was modified post rebuild by Underwood for the type D Infrared viewer. BUT only the stock was modified as it still used the T-3 mount on the top of the receiver. The cut out in the stock was for the hanging of the big infrared lamp below the stock. It would appear no holes were drilled and tapped on the receiver so that would appear to have been done for something else as the scope was mounted on the T-3 type mount with Redfield type rings. The picture in WB shows an earlier prototype version where the cut in the stock is a little bit further forward then the one you have. I would say it was a Korean war modification to the stock. Nice find anyway one looks at it. No Bubba work on the stock but the on the receiver? Well it could be but I don't know.

Have you gone further with trying to figure out what the deal is?

Mine is drilled and tapped also, and I sometimes wonder if it was part of this whole system. Sounds like the consensus is "no". But here's my receiver. One less hole than yours, but very similar:

Have you ever shot it and does it function well with those holes in it? Do they affect the lug recess on the inside?

I'm still looking for info. I did shot it & it shoots with no problems. Yours mite be drilled & tap for the Weaver side mount . Mine has been machined on the top & bottom of the drilled & taped screw holes & my back 2 holes are way in the back by the rear sight. I think it would have more luck in finding a chicken with teeth then info on the carbine but lots of fun looking. Maybe the Carbine Club mite have some info ???

Yeah, I see your holes look bigger, the rear ones are way further back, and I see the cuts in the receiver. Not the same thing. I'm almost wondering if I could get my hands on one of those weaver mounts, just to see if that's the right pattern. And since they're there, I might even mount it. But I don't want to screw up a stock, so I probably wouldn't. But it would be interesting to throw a scope on.

I'm kind of irritated about it, as I didn't know about it when we bought it. My Dad went and picked it up and I really don't recall if the guy disclosed it or not to my Dad. Either way, there is a lot of other good parts on it, and I suppose it makes it a good "shooter" and not a collecter. Yet I've had issues with getting it to run. It might be as simple as my recoil spring though. I bought one new when I first bought it and it's 1/4" out of spec. And I haven't shot THAT many rounds though it. Maybe 500. If that. I need to start logging it. So anyways.... Yours is pretty cool. It looks like that mount is on the side, and might need some kind of bracket to attach to the receiver from that picture you posted. There are obviously two screws of some sort on that big bracket.

To resurrect this thread, I was prowling through the CCNLs and may have stumbled upon an answer to this mystery. My NLs are reprints - photocopies of originals - so much detail is lost in photos. However, pictured in NL #61 is the same bracket as shown here, mounted on a carbine handguard with the same notch. The bracket has a grip attached. Also, the receiver has two pairs of holes in the same location on the left side of the receiver as shown here. The NL photos also show a scope mount attached through these four holes.

The answer came in NL #129. A member found a photo in The Metric FAL by Stevens and Van Rutten that also shows the bracket and mount. According to this book, this rig was for a Dutch-made night scope mounting to the FAL adopted in 1954.

The first article says the carbine pictured was a QHMC (different from the OP's). So, is it Dutch homework, Dutch military scrounging, or was similar work done on at least two carbines after importation? Anyone have the FAL book and can take a closer look? Have carbines been imported from Holland?

Many carbines from all over Europe went imported by Interarms in Virgina in the early to mid 60's.

Still looking for info on what kind of scope mount was on this carbine. Got some info from Jim mock he thinks that it could have been an Ordnance Experimental carbine . He will send pics to Larry Ruth but he is kind of buizzzy on his new book. I still cant find a
Metric fall book . I was told on this forum that mite have some info on the scope mount .

Hi gunsdora ive got one of these carbines complete with mount and front switch for nightvision they had a philips unit mounted on them and are dutch I will do photos soon as I figure out how to up load them

Yes I got the pics thanks .WOW :super:. Very nice. Now I now it's not a back yeard gunsmith that did the work on my carbine. I tryed to put the pics you sent with my other pics so I can transfer them to photobucket then put them up here but they come out helf the size very small pics ???. I will try & figure this out & put the pics up soon. maybe some one here can help me. Thanks again for the pics.
