M1 Garand Bayonet Question

Hello,

Just picked up a M1 Garand. Great rifle so far. I have only had the chance to shoot a couple of rounds through it.

The question I have is regarding the bayonet that came with the rifle. I was wondering if it was a reproduction?

I have looked at a bunch of images online and it looks authentic to my beginner eyes. :)

No, it looks correct. Utica Cutlery and an M1 blade. Nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. Scabbard should have a little Vp on the back for Victory Plastics, unless it's worn off.

Ya know I have never noticed that small vp on the back.

It's right... Looks good.

Very nice finish in the blade. Nice mill marks on the cross-guard as well.

May I ask how straight the blade is?

As far as I can tell it is straight. The blade will lay flat on a table. Is there some other way to check?

looks perfectly good to me , as does the scabbord , i think its fitting for your M1rifle to have a nice M1 bayonet and M7 scabbord

If you hold the blade up and look down the spine you may see an arc in the blade or an angle between the tang and the blade. Doesn't mean a thing as far a functionality is concerned. Didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade.

I only asked because I don't have a WW2 era US bayo that would be considered strait by commercial standards. I think the warpage is caused by the quench and temper. Post quench and temper straitening didn't seem to be much of a priority. Or is it part of a a de-mill procedure:madsmile: ? WW1 era bayos I have inspected are for the most arrow strait.

This is what's neat about WW2 manufacturing; America figured out what was necessary to win the war and über strait bayonets weren't.

Again sir, congratulations on the nice blade ( I wish my M1 had its finish ).

I just examined my blades and there's no problem. They're straight. I'll tell you from prsonal use, bayonets get bent in training due to the gallows in the bayonet part of the obstacle course. A new bayonet will be straight. Most of these are far from new.

I appreciate the comment on the gallows. I do have some that are bent at the cross guard that appear to be due to use (maybe your use!). I also have some that are arced across the entire blade. It really looks like warpage from heat treating. I have read (can't find it) that there was a straitening operation after quench and tempering. Others have an axial twist that is right at the the cross guard. Those look to be due to improper setup from grinding. As if the angle they started grinding from wasn't in the same plane as the tang. Some of my blades appear to be factory (to me anyway for whatever that's worth). Some still have that machine grinding that traverses the blade. Others were finished by hand.
