I'm looking to see what (if any) companies were still manufacturing 1903's (or any variants) in 1944? My
Carbine (Inland) and Garand (Springfield) were both built in late '44, and I'm hoping to add an '03 made in '44. Any help would be much appreciated!
M1/M3 Carbine: late '44 Inland
M1 Garand: late '44 Springfield
My O3A3 was built in 43, so I would guess they were made in 44 also.
There are some very late A3 rifles made in early '44. Production stopped in Feb. of that year.
There were plenty of '03's rebuilt in that year, but no new production.
If you want a '44 dated '03, just get a rebuild. Plenty of nice '03's with excellent '44 dated HS barrels out there.
Roughly all M1903A3s from about s/n 4,150,000 and up were built in Jan or Feb., 1944. The problem is that the last production barrel (i.e. not made for overhaul) was 12-43; there are some people who say 1-44 barrels were made for production.

Hummmm.....Vi also says the June-ish produced guns wore 12-43 and 1-44 bbls . What's up with that ? Floor sweapings ? End of run clean-up ? Chart error ?

Nope what Rick suggested was that components like barrels that had the date of manufacture stamped on them had to be made well ahead of the rifles actual assembly.Quote:

No A3 rifles were assembled after that but 3556 were shipped in March and 200 in April.
A4 assembly was essentially done in April. A relative handful were built in May and June and shipping finally completed in August when the last of the Weaver scopes trailed in.

Hatcher's Notebook says the last Smith-Corona was serial # 4,845,831 and it was made 19 Feb 1944.
Remington made 03's, about 348,000 of them, till the M1903A3 was approved 21 May 1942.
An all correct Remington 03 is a hard rifle to find. An all correct 03 is a hard rifle to find, rebuilds are far more common.
Although the M1903A3 was adopted in May, 1942, it was several months until the bugs were worked out. Relatively large-scale Remington M1903A3 production didn't happen until December; the last Remington M1903 was made in March, 1943.Quote:

My 03A4, s/n 4998457, is one of the final ones out of the barn in spring 1944. It has a RA 1-44 barrel measuring 302 on the GI throat erosion gauge and 30075 at the muzzle, which I believe to be an original installation. It also has a scant style stock, which again appears to be the original. It is an accurate shooter.
I believe that Sedgley may have produced the lastest dated replacement barrels. I have a 1922 vintage M1903 which is fitted with a 1-45 dated Sedgley showing 303 on the GI throat gauge and 3015 at the muzzle. It is a good shooter.
Receiver DATED 1944? M1903s did not have receiver dates. The highest SPRINGFIELD 1903 dates to s/n 1,536,000 range and dates to 1939. I have seen a few 2-45 Sedgely (circle S) barrels.Quote:

I happen to have s/n 1535436 it sports a '44 SA barrel, my notes at work don't show the month. It is a Bubba gun with the stock whittled on, rear sight & sleeve removed, Peep added and a rubber pad screwed over the origional butt plate using only the top screw.
