ARGH!!! I just had to do it Put a Standard Products "in jail" today

:madsmile: Dang carbineits! Same shop where I got the Inland had a beautiful Standard Products "mix-master" on the shelf (it's mine now on 10 day hold). After some negotiating and trading, it's now mine. While I am still putting the un-messed with Inland in a different stock set for shooting, I really wanted a different carbine to carry as a patrol carbine. I am more comfortable with the M1 carbine than an AR as a duty weapon, maybe because I carried an M1 Carbine for so many years., The Inland is just too nice to subject to that.

Standard Products ser# 2143800, Underwood barrel (maybe faint date) with flaming bomb and small P on top. ME between 1 and 2 (about 1.5), Type III band "AI" and Type II rear sight "PI". Flat bolt and Early, pre-type V slide. Finish is even and 90-95% It is in a Beautiful tung oil finished matching light birch M2 stock and handguard. Has a repro C tip sling, which is OK for my uses. I'll get some pictures next time I visit it.

According to Riesch, The Underwood barrel would be correct, though the other items (rear sight and Type III band) are the usual later upgrades.

I have got to go there next week to drop off the trade goods, so I'll get some pics. It looks a lot like ABPOS's Standard Products, but the stock is lighter. Kinda sexy! I didn't notice an import stamp, but some do them light under the barrel band on the bottom.

RM, You are really developing a stroke of luck in finding these carbines. That one is NICE! Congrats!

I am curious about the stock. It appears to have a M-2 cut on the left side. Add that it also has a Type IV mag catch and it really makes you wonder where it is has been. (i.e., both the stock and parts of the metal have some very late upgrades)

It is kinda like an "almost potbelly' stock. It is heavier in front of the mag well than a standard M1 and early M2 stocks, but not a huge potbelly. It really feels nice in the hands. I bet it will be a good shooter, The bore is mirror bright and it is about 1.5+ ME. I checked the trigger guard housing, and it is not M2, nor is the slide an M2. I checked for import marks, and could not find any. Maybe under the bayonet band.

Anyone got an idea of "Born on Date" for serial No. 2,143,800? It is going to take some effort to bring out the barrel date. Only one digit "4" in the second half of the date is clear, but I don't know if it is XX-X4 or XX-4X

Not sure this will help much. I have 2 later Standard Product's both with Underwood barrels dated 3-44 P proof marks 4" from end of muzzle 2236704 and 2238359.

I have a Standard Products 2237842 with a 3-44 barrel

Mike, when I pick it up on the 13th, I'll try to get good pic mith my wife's Nikon D90 and a macro lens.

My barrel is marked 10-43. It's got the flat bolt and same op slide as yours too. I think. And yeah, my wood is lighter than some. Not as light as yours, but has a lighter hew to it. I wonder if it was their finishing process or if the wood was just lighter to begin with. Is the trigger housing stamped/braized?

I have 2,175,176 with a 1-44 barrel. One source says Jan 1944 for build date.

The 2,143,800 is really close to your (22,000 earlier) so maybe 12-43 or early 1-44 for mine

I think Jan 1944 also.

Man, they were pumping them things out. Wow. Mine is 2,059,xxx and the barrel is marked 10-43.

May be a Type IV stock with the long barrel channel.
Will be curious if it has the extra cut for recoil plate support.

They weren't pumping that many out. Standard Products only made 4% of the carbines. Where as Inland made about 43% of the carbines.

Yeah, I know. But from the numbers, a couple hundred thousand in a 6 month period or so? Maybe my math is wrong. Or the block of numbers are not that big. That's probably what it was. Either way, they whole system was pumping them out. That's for sure. It's hard to wrap my head around. What was it, 6 million some made? Within 3 years?

Standard Products barely had a 12 month run and did a touch over 247,000 carbines. (Their serial block was 370,000 wide.) While there were production ups and downs, that puts a ROUGH average of 20,500 per month or about 700 per DAY (Ruth has more exact numbers).

As far as barrels go and dating what is on your SP, remember that SP used barrels (mostly Underwood) from the Free Barrel Program. So the date of the barrel may not accurately date the production date of the receiver or complete program. If the barrel is original to the carbine, the carbine production/assembly would be a date AFTER the date of the barrel.

Just my two cents worth...

I never realy got into Standard P. to heavy. They were to hard to find correct parts for with their numbered parts. But I do have a original 2,165,--- S.P. with a 1-44 barrel. I would guess yours would be 12-43.

Thank you. I would call that "pumping them out". But I'm guessing some of the other contractors were doing more than that. But 700 a day? Wow. I can't imagine.

I was looking at the barrel picture, and I am seeing 12-43 for a barrel date. I massaged the picture a little and I think it is clearer in this pic:

I picked it up today! Hurray! Broke it down, ands no surprise, had not been cleaned since it was shot. The pison was tight and would not move, but after about 10 minutes soaking in WWII vintage GI bore cleaner, it moves freely. Everything was dry inside and dirty. Cleaned up nice, though. The trigger guard and slide are Quality Hardware, but didn't break it down all the way for a detail strip yet. Maybe after I test fire it and sight it in. I did notice the barrel is hung perfectly in the recoil lug, per CMP tech notes. Also NO IMPORT STAMPS! I put an empty case in the chamber and cycled the action. VERY positive ejection, about 3+ feet to my my 4 o'clock. Fed 110 FMJ rounds cycling by hand from a USGI 30 rounder. More to come. I am very happy.

The stock has a gloss finish like spar varnish of gloss Verathane. Pretty good for a duty gun that will be out in the Sierra Nevadas in all weather.

Update: Took the Standard Products to work with me tonight. I found an appropriate place in the woods, set up a carbine 25 yard target, paced of about 30 yards. Illuminating the target with the Jeeps headlights (it was pitch black), I fired 5 rounds from the top of a 30 round USGI magazine filled with 110 FMJ Remington ammo. I fired off-hand, leaning my body against the patrol jeep. This is what I got:

Not bad, for basically off-hand shooting, at night, using headlights. Never had to move the sight from its 100/150 setting, and it seems centered as I got it. I fired the rest of the magazine (25 rounds) off hand at various dirt clods and pine cones from 15-30 yards, using a 6 o'clock hold, and seemed to nail everything I shot at. SWEET!!!!!! I'll post a picture later.

Here's the Standard Products "on duty". With a 30 in the weapon, and two 15s in the stock pouch, I don't feel under-gunned. I have four more 30s in a M2 Carbine magazine pouch with a shoulder strap in the Jeep.
THe stock is something between an early non-potbelly M2 stock and a potbelly one. Maybe a potbelly that was sanded down. It feels better in the hand than the standard M1 stock. I can't wait to bench shoot the SP for group size.

I keep a 30 in the weapon and two 15s on the stock in a pouch, giving me 60 rounds just grabbing the weapon (This is what I did on the SO, back in the day). I have four 30s in the nylon pouch on the seat, so I have 120 more rounds handy. If I need more than than, I'm screwed!

I would get a real 30 round mag pouch, but that's just me. They are around.

I actually have two of the real 30 rounder pouches. If I had room on my duty belt, I'd use a GI M2 pouch! They work better than the ALICE pouch on a belt, but no where near as well as a shoulder snatch and grab bag!

My match-winning carbine is also a Special Products mixmaster, No 2200xxx. Also with Underwood barrel, dated 1x-44 (I really cannot make out the second figure).

But about 1.5" further back towards the breech end there is another marking: letters I and A, serif characters, about 5/32 high, with the I centered on the A to create a symmetrical monogram above a date 7-61.

Does this indicate some kind of arsenal makeover, bore refresh or what? It is not an importer's mark or German proof mark, with which I am familiar.

Any ideas?

WOW! I just did an additional function test on the Standard Products at work tonight. I found a local source for 110 JSP PPU (Prvi Partizan) at $23 a box of 50. Using my AYP 30 round magazines and the Standard Products, I first checked for POA compared to the RP ammo I have been using. At 25 yards, the POA was the same as the Remington. I then shot 2 magazines of 30 110 JSP PPU ammo, as fast as I could pull the trigger. Zero malfunctions. Fed slick as ball ammo. So far this SP carbine feeds R-P 110 FMJ and 110 JSP, Lake City Vietnam era ammo, and now PPU soft point. In several hundred rounds from 30 round magazines, I have zero malfunctions.
