Hi guys, I recently purchased a c no 7. I took it to the range today and when I fired it the extractor pops a hole in the fired brass. I would assume this isn't normal and was wondering how to go about fixing this problem, the bolt is matched to the rifle and it appears to have been used very little.
Is the hole made during firing, or when the case is extracted?
If the rifle is in mint condition, it might just be a very strong extractor spring coupled with a sharp unused extractor claw that is tearing the thin brass cases. These rifles were built to fire tens of thousands of rounds, and they probably take a long time to wear in using RF ammo.

I tried the gun again with more rounds lastnight and its not the extractor making the holes, the cases are bursting when its fired and they are bursting out where the extractor fits into the receiver. I tried some different ammo and the problem became intermitent but the cases that didnt rupture would still have buldges in them.

Could the extractor cutout be too far down into the chamber? It normally begins just at the edge of the rim area and the straight part of the chamber is not altered.
It does look like a failure to support the case. Normally something seen in race guns like .40 or .45 ACP...that would make sence.Quote:

Two solutions jump to mind, both requiring barrel removal.
You can repair the damage with braze, or shorten the barrel by 1 turn and recut the extractor slot and recut the chamber, the first option is not for anything other than .22's.
You might be smart to just check the headspace on the old girl, this happens a bit with old single shot rifles, so this could have some bearing on your problem.
Worth a look anyway.

I've seen this in other CNo7. Generally headspace or extractor cut too deep. There are bolt head sizes ranging from 0 to 5 to correct headspace. What # is on your bolt head?. If not headspace then the exractor is cut too deep and wall of cartridge is unsupprted. If later then it requires the barrel to be removed, set back and rechambered. Is the barrel original to the rifle? There are quite a number of put together CNo7's surfacing as a supply of new receivers has appeared. Is there a serial number on the left side of the butt sockett. Confirm these details and I might be able to tell you more. Ron
Even though they're difficult to see photos, those cases indicate to me something major wrong with the chamber of the rifle. Get it looked at PDQ is my advice.
Hi guys thanks for the responses, the rifle ser # is 0L7740 I beleive and its 1945 dated. The number on the bolt head is 3 and the bolt matches the rifle. I have not had the wood off yet to check the barrel for a number but I looked at the chamber when a cartridge is in there and there is a space where the brass is not supported and thats where the case is blowing out. I am taking it back to the man I bought it off tomorrow.
Your Cno7 serial number is correct for a 1945. If the serial number on the butt socket and bolt match then you have a very desireable CNo7. Barrels are not serialized. The chamber can be repaired if that's the issue. You could ask the seller for a refund for the rifle or it's repair by a competent person. Pictures show a nice clean CNo7. It would be wothwhile having the rifle examined by a gunsmith to determine extactly whats wrong. Hard to say for sure by looking at a few pictures. Hope this helps. Ron
Thanks Ron, I read a lot about the rifle before I decided to buy one but I missed the extractor cut being too deep, it doesn't appear to be chipped but I can't be sure. Did the extractor being cut to deep happen at the factory ever? The wrist serial #s seem to be the same as the ones on my no 4 longbranch as far as I can tell. And there doesn't appear to be the flatspot I have seen in pics of made up ones. I will post some pic's tomorrow showing the problem and of the gun itself. I would like to get a cleaning rod and original brushes but assume they are next to impossible to come by. Kyle
If you can get a picture of the extractor cut maybe I can tell you more. I've seen correct cleaning rod, jag, brushes for sale. Just need to keep watching the ads and shows. I dont know why the extractor cut would be off if factory. Pull the rear handguard and see if there are any markings on the barrel. If you can post a picture of the muzzle head on. Ron (Canada)
Took some pics, notices there is a small cdn broad arrow and a 22 and the underside of the barrel at the receiver, but also noticed one of the pieces of wood has a brittish broad arrow as shown in the pics, and when I got the bolt in the light the ser # looks a bit iffy I think.

Without any shadow of doubt whatsoever, the extractor way in that barrel has been butchered - and I mean BUTCHERED! How do some let these butchers loose on these things. Your comments regarding the other bits are mere incidentals KC. It's the barrel that is the problem and without putting too fine a point on it, and in my humble experience as an Armourer, it's scrap!

Looks like dremel work...can't imagine why though.
My two previous fixes are still workable.
Not a good advert. for whoever did the job.
Only a really experienced gunsmith is going to fix that barrel. Someone butchered the extractor cut for some unknown reason. The only way to save the barrel is to re-sleeve and recut the chamber and for it to look right. Only the most experienced gunsmith is going to be able to do that kind of work. Probably cheaper just to replace the barrel if they are available.

But look on the plus side. That barrel will eventually deserve its rightful place in our pictures of horror gallery in the future.
Can you just imagine the consequences of you were laying alongside with your binos or telescope spotting for him................... That'd make your ears ring!
I would think that that is a serious miss by any gunsmith or even any shooter. If you can see the side of the case when the round is chambered it should be a major alarm bell.
The extractor way is, as noted, butchered. The serial on the bolt handle shows at least welding and a restamping of the rifle serial. The style of serial on the receiver is also not correct.
I would get my money back.

Pardon the need of a good cleaning.
CNo.7 trainers are notorious for extraction issues after firing. Most people simply reach in and pluck the spent round out with a finger nail. Perhaps some well-meaning home gunsmith (bubba) thought he could improve the extractors function by relieving the area around the grove. Looking at it I would say the barrel would have to come back more than one turn. Might be easier to bore out/reline and cut a new chamber and extractor grove.
ON a personal note, I don't think that it's a fixable proposition. It'll always be nothing more than a fix. I'd just give it back to the butcher who sold it to you and ask for your money plus a few ££'s costs AND give him a print-out of these fine comments posted on the forum - AND tell him to sit and ponder on events that might have been if your pal was laying alongside spotting for you which we've all done in the past............., me last Sunday with my son!

"Butcher" is an understatement. I built two of these rifles for myself from parts accumulated in the past 20 years and I've never seen such a thing, nor was it necessary under any circumstances. Every time I think I've seen it all...........
Hi guys, just to let everyone know the fellow that sold me the rifle is making it right. He is a dealer and collector and got this gun in, sold it to me and he missed the problem just as I did untill I fired it. Mistakes happen and he felt very bad. He stopped to see me today and is going to let me come to his house and pick out a c no 7 from his personal collection. Thanks for the help and knowledge guys. Kyle
