When a supposed 'expert' and moderator on another forum posts the following (refering to a No4)

"If your rifle has the screw going through the stock from left to right, just in front of the trigger guard a few inches, it has been to India. They also would re-cut the chamber to a slight oval at the breech. This allowed their Monsoon rain to escape out of the rifle if it was loaded with the muzzle up. While this help prevent the splitting of the barrel when fired, it plays hell on the walls of our commercial brass. It does not seem to affect the military loaded cases as the walls are much thicker".

and

"What I was hoping was that you took notice of that so called Number 1,2,3 bolt heads was the fix for a too large head spacing problem. It is not. The bolt heads were machined/filed down to fit what ever spacing problem was done by the Armorer".

I know as much as you put up the facts(with the sources to back it up)you will get someone who will argue the facts and perpetuate the myths. All you can do is try. Hopefully the mod of the Enfield forum will step in(yeah I know he'll just lock it and not solve anything).

Alan, I PM'd the OP 11 hours ago to let him know not to put any faith in anything that particular demi-god has to say on the topic..... but that was just after he had posted the link to his headspace thread. I haven't had a reply, but have just seen the demi-gods latest posting about the monsoonal rains... sheeesh! hmmm, just wondering, if a No1 mkIII or a No4 had the chambers cut out to an oval shape so the monsoonal rain could drain out if they were loaded muzzle up, would that mean a No5, with many times the "catchment" area in the flash hider cone, would need a bigger oval to drain more water? :confused:

I'm not commenting on anything here other than the original question. What chance have we got? Well, we have this forum with so many knowledgeable people. Brad, Brian Dick, Peter Laidler and so many others who are willing and eager to provide the correct information. I could sit all day and name people who are helpful. I have mostly lurked around here just soaking in information and I have learned a heck of a lot in the time I've been around. So, for those of us willing to learn we have a pretty good chance. Now we just have to do our part to help pass on the correct information and hope that others can learn in turn.

Yes, the chamber of all Enfields used in the tropics were cut to an oval shape. But not to let the Monsoon rain flow out. It let part of the blast out to the rear in order to dry the hair of sepoys. This increased their religious fanaticism and overcame their fear of death. I heard this from a very wise man. It´s TRUE!

I have owned, repaired and fired Enfields since 1963 (first one cost $12 in surplus shop) and I have never heard of an oval chamber. I have checked some of the chambers on the 30-odd Enfields I own and never found one in that shape. Obviously, I need to re-check all mine with careful attention to chamber shape.

Fictions get told around so often that many assume they are truths when they are really misconceptions or simply maliciousness on the part of the teller. "Ignore ignorance" was one of my Mother's favorite truisms.

Everybody who experiences a bit of difficulty chambering a round might want to take in this snippet form , yep, you guessed it... "the usual suspects"... :madsmile:

Just saw this. It's been quite a worrying and anxious weekend here in Brisbane with the storm activity and flooding but this really gave me something to laugh about.

Well i got banned from that site today, told that turkey not to take me for a fool, so it seems that makes me an unsuitable member & after reading that post, seems not being a fool is why i dont fit in.

Well it does'nt do much for me.
I've been recutting reamers trying to get the correct oval chambers in the rebarrel jobs I do for the boys.
I certainly would'nt want them caught out in a rainstorm, next I will need to work on opening up the bolt channel enough to get half a turn on the bolt head, this could sort out all that headspace rubbish.
But I found out early, you can't beat the MAN, just remember the rhyme about Simple Simon.

Well muffer with regard to the bolt head being unwound half a turn, he did infact talk to a couple of smiths, I presume he means gunsmiths, and it was found to be possible with abnormally long chambers or something like that. Why don't you chime in, might be fun.

Mate, I've been warned, wouldn't like to follow 5Batt. besides, if you can shove a bolthead into an action with the head around 180 degrees from the guide rail , then you deserve to have all the problems. (I'll lend them a hammer)
I reckon of all the causes of bolts not closing on the firing point with these old darlings I have dealt with, have all been due to the head being one turn out,(360 degrees) so the action must be pretty stretched to get one to close, that's pretty tight headspace.:lol:

Well after Allan pointed out the bolt head simply can't be unwound by half a turn and cycled he hasn't responded. He'd be feeling pretty low just now I would imagine, poor fella.

No poor fella, the amount of people he's crucified to protect his own delerious little domain has me wondering how he manages to survive.

He's barely surviving over there mate. His lack of knowledge with enfields is so obvious that he hardly has the confidence to post and the only way he can post nonsense and go uncorrected is to get rid of the most knowledgeable. 5thbatt brought more to that forum in the way of correct information and hard facts backed up by his impeccable collection of rifles than anyone else I can think of, as did tech support.
