Arisaka Type 99 Sniper

Hello. Since I've got my Ishaphore 2A1 this past summer. I've been thinking of this Jap rifle my father in law has had. I received all his firearms except this one after his passing, cause at the time I had no interest in a Japanese rifle. Well since seeing all the interest here and there and after the EnField purchase I have grown fond of the history and simplicity of bolt actions. Well I just found out this T99 is a all matching sniper minus it's scope. Found out it came from Nagoya arsenal #6227. There is one up on Gunbroker now with a #6394 serial. All 10K or so were made at Nagoya so this is one of the 10,000. The stock has a few gouges and it's missing it's aircraft wings. What is involved in removing the scope mount to see the series and full serial numbers. Condition is probably 80% metal finish is good with a bright chrome bore. Any thoughts on value. I plan on cleaning it up for a part time shooter.

I'm not too sure I would try to take anything apart on that rifle. One little gouge on a screw could diminish the value. A broken screw a disaster! That is a great piece you have there!

Just in th last few min I realized that original condition. May not want to chance shooting it to much ether.

Leave the scope mounting base alone if at all possible. It's a scarce and fairly valuable rifle even without the scope. There are several subvariants, the most common being the 2.5x and the 4x internally adjustable scope types. The base varies between the two, so it ought to be fairly easy to determine what scope is appropriate.

Sorry, but that's about the only detail shot I have of the 4x base. (Done whilst on a fair weather hunt some time back.) It seems to match yours. Reference books are at home, so I can't help further at this point.

When the receiver was machined for the scope base the serial number and series mark were machined off. The serial number is either on the top of the rear bridge or side of the front. Taking the block off will only get you damage to the base and rifle.

I agree with Roy. The mount base should not be removed. It would be a total waste. The serial is the number you see on the receiver bridge.

Yes, Nagoya made 10000 T99 snipers with 3 variations. One the most common 4X nonadjustable, the 2.5x Cutback and the 4X adjustable.

Kokura actually made the first t99 snipers making 1000 with 2.5X scopes. Less than 60 are known and only about 35 scopes are known.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. Will keep as assembled with all staked screws. I have assembled some hand loads and no problems keeping them in the black @ 100yds. Now to find a 2.5X scope :banghead:

Hey Guys: Maybe this is a good opportunity to see who ended up with my T99 sniper. Nagoya #9639 . Sold it to somebody on the East Coast a long time ago. As things go, it was probably sold and resold between collectors or profiteers who knows how many times . 4x7* Sniper scope is mismatched, serial no.5701 with a circle inside a star marking. Well, just about everything on it was mismatched, bolt #247 and scope case # 8654.

I could not figure out how to edit, but to clarify--In the close up picture the T99s are a Nagoya 4X adjustable, Nagoya 4x fixed, Nagoya 2.5 Cutback with correct T99 marked cutback scope, Kokura with correct 2.5X 99 Kokura specific scope, then a Kokura 99 with incorrect cloudy T97 scope(this rifle fired a 0.84 inch 5 shot group at 100 yds with Norma ammo), then another Kokura 99 which has butt showing only and now has a correct scope.

In the big picture, the T97s have three Nagoya 97s and three Kokura 97s plus a scope deficiency. Most of these rifles are about 1.5 MOA rifles. I have fired them all. Match ammo, or handloads with match componets, should improve that a bit.

You ought to add some insights to the 6,5 Japanese ammo threads that resurface periodically. It would sure beat "reinventing the wheel"!

As far as the 7,7 ammo goes, the Hornady 150gr PSP seems about the best of the factory ammunition in the Type 99, generally speaking. Why the 174 gr bullets don't do better is a minor mystery.

Just thought I should have everybody look at this T99 sniper rifle being sold on Gunbroker right now. The scope mount plate has been removed and we can see that there is nothing under it as markings are concerned. The arsenal and serial number are only on the bridge of the receiver as they were destined to be sniper rifles from the start.

Those are some fine looking Arisakas gents....thanks for the post! I have Dad's that he brought back from Okinawa, but it's the standard rifle, not the sniper. He never really had alot of interest in it, but I've grown to really appreciate it over the years. What a rugged weapon it is.

I picked up a Nagoya T99 sniper a few years back for 75 bucks. No scope but all there. It was abasket case though, it had been placed above a fireplace since the end of the was and was well and truly covered in rust.

Hal, I would not be surprised to see a rifle in that condition restored. Regardless, some of the parts remain valuable. Of course you can enjoy it as is too.

I do reload but have not reloaded 7.7 for a few years now. As a result I have little to add on that right now. I have used Hornady factory ammo and it is OK, not great. I have had best results with Norma. I also had good results with a commercial load that used 148 grain Silver tip soviet bullets in their loads but name eludes me and I am pretty sure it is no longer available. Using these Soviet bullets are pretty inexpensive and effective in my limited experience. I have used 174 gr Sierra Match King HPBT, 0.311 diameter, and results were OK but not what I expected from such a good bullet. I have some Hornady 312 match bullets I will try evetially. I really want to try some Soviet bullets from the Extra Match ammo, which will requiire pulling and messing up amazing ammo, but these bullets are extraordinary although 200 grain. I would have to get back to some of my prior research to come up with a good load for the 7.7. I have been shooting 54r so much in the last several years I need to get back and give the Japanese rifles another trial.

Restoration almost complete. I let the rifles soak covered in Kroil in a plastic bag for almost six months. I'll post pics when done.

Looking forward to a range report.... and restoration of this rifle!!!

My report is a fine shooter without the scope. Hand loads shoot 2 MOA with the crude peep site.

I love those rifles, the scope for it can be as hard to find and more expensive than the rifle itself. I would love to give it a home should you decide to move it. The scopes were individually fitted to their rifle for accuracy with most scopes not having external adjustments at all

Bought a bubarized 7.7 type 99, since already crudely sporterized I decided to give a second life ...and fully sporterized the nice way.... sold unwanted parts to pay for 95% inletted stock and give a total face lift.
Also reform some 06 case and loaded with 150 Hornady spire. Further tested with Norma
180 gr. factory load that print 5" low compared to 150 Hornady using the same setting, for the 150 Hornady I finally selected the 46.0 gr. load.

Shot this today. Iron sight two different loads, one with 42.8gr. RL15 the other 40gr. WC846. 5 of each with the Hornady 174gr. .3105" FMJ bullet. :dancingbanana:Attachment 46181

These guns are capable of good accuracy. I took one of my scoped sporters to the range recently and shot this group. To minimize shooter's error, I shoot at 50 yds for my tests. Since I have a good supply of 123gr/.311 Hornady bullets, I used that. Powder charge was 35.0gr of IMR4064. Not bad for an economy sporter.

Great piece, but finding that scope , good luck , and be preapred for the sticker shock yuo do find one , they are rare and hard to come by , when ya do find them if it is still working and unaltered worth way more than the rifle itself i would think , i may say consider selling as is and find a regular type 99 for a shooter , you could get good money for that rifle as is , finding that scope is gonna be the real trick if you decide to keep it, thanx for sharing great loking old arisaka.

see my long range type 99 thread for a sporter arisaka build , not easy but when done right is a real tack driver with my handloads, i use 4064 and 4895 or varget when i can get it even ram shot big game works , i love the 7.7 cartridge when handloaded they are capable of astounding accuracy for such a simple design.Any way we can see a pic of that sporter Roberto?I would love a peek at her.
