The "Modern" AR thread.

We've got a thread for Retro ARs, so it's probably a good idea to have one for modern guns. That way we can keep all those icky rails and bolt-on doo-dads in one place. :lol:

Here's a recent pic of my three to start it off. I just got the 12.5" in the center and it's a wonderful rifle to shoot. Had it out today in -15C weather and was banging the 200m gong with the irons resting on the edge of a bench.

The NEA's are 1 in 7 and I'm pretty sure the Armalite is 1 in 9.

55 gr. is all I shoot.

Are those offset folding sights on your black rifle?

Good eye, magpul buis on 45° rails I'll be upgrading to low pro rails and sights permitting funds, also adding magpul moe rifle stock!
BTW, love the short barrels, thats a no no in michigan :(

Yup...I have one of those too...Nothing special. Aimpoint, 1/7 barrel and an old KAC on the front. It works fine though. Where were these when we wanted to carry something like this?

Knight's with TA31 RCO-M150. The front grip thingie is mostly for long hikes. It rarely gets used whilst shooting. Light gets attached as required.

It's a Burris PEPR 30mm, the non-QD version.

Edit: Just realized you said "scope" and not "scope mount".

It's a Leatherwood Hi-lux CMR 1-4x24.

Colt 6720 with Aimpoint Micro and Geissele SSA FCG. (Currently, this rifle is wearing yet another TA31 ACOG, but that's subject to change for a smaller unit.) It also has been since "downgraded" to an old small set (single heatshield) of Colt handguards.

What stock is that on the 6720?

We can't seem to get any pencil barrels up here. Everything is either Gov't or HBAR profile.

Rogers' Super Stock (Or something similar namewise) It comes with the current run of Colts and is Colt marked in addition to the mfg's name. Similar in function to the Magpul CTR, but the clamping force is adjustable. Stylistically not as attractive as the Magpul, I think, but it's invisible whilst shouldered, so it really doesn't matter...

BTW, one thing that's hugely annoying about Colt buttstock tubes is that they have one less locking hole than everybody else's product. Which happens to be one that I often use whilst hunting or doing "in close" work. Have yet to rectify the situation, though.

For practicality, mine has lost the Mall Ninja railed forend, picked up an Eotech MPOIII and a railed gas block to attach a front sling swivel.

I thought semi-auto rifles were banned in Australia?

Not quite Stevo.

Very heavily regulated and enforced and beyond the realms of possibility for most people.

They can only be imported with the permission of the Attorney General's Dept. for very specific uses. There were ten of these made here in Oz to bypass the AG as an experiment to gauge interest but the production costs due to low volume seems to have killed off the idea.

It seems good to go. Shot 60 rounds with no signs of excess pressure.

We've gone through thousands of that out here in Victoria. No problems.

I bought a case of white boxed Norinco last year, headstamped CJ 95, that was terrible. Blown and flattened primers and bent rims in the same box as rounds that wouldn't cycle the action.

This stuff seems much better.

Spent some quality time with a buddy's AR, my angle grinder and my Dremel, today. Cut the FSB, bayonet lug, and delta ring off and ground down the leftovers to allow a FF handguard to fit over top.

Used this Barska scope for the 22 kit. I hadn't shot it with 5.56 yet so I figured I'd use it for the .22....It has Illuminated .223 BDCR, a quick adjust turret from 100-500 yards and about a 4in eye relief that I absolutely love:madsmile:.

The 5 to the left were definitely me...I'll find out for sure tomorrow it was getting dark and I had already been in the 10 deg weather for 2hrs straight :D, seems to group decent at 50yds non the less :thup:

I couldn't "tap" my pins out so I ended up milling them out on the bridgeport :madsmile:, just because I had to show it who was boss. I should have done it your way, it would have been a lot faster after spending all that time trying to tap them out

In all honesty, I would have preferred to drive the pins out and reshape the FSB off the barrel. The Norinco ARs have incredibly tight pins, however. I've read lots of reports of guys ruining steel punches and even failing to get the pins out using hydraulic presses. We did take a few whacks at them with a BFH and they didn't move a fraction.

We could also have cut the FSB off and gone with a clamp-on or set-screw gas block, but my buddy was on a budget and the pinned gas block is superior, IMO, to either the clamp or set-screw gas block.

Looks like you're getting good results with the CMMG kit. Are you able to find enough .22LR to feed it?

I also think the cut down FSB is better than anything you can buy. Having tried the alternatives several times, I finally accepted that "Bubba'd" is better than store bought. :madsmile:

My local shop had a couple cases of the CCI AR tactical, I may pick up more today, although I would like to find some more mini mags. Both my AR's have unpinned FSB, the Bushy having the ARMS flip that is clamp on and the M&P has a cheap low pro with I believe 2 set screws with loctite. I havnt had any problems but I havn't shot enough .223 to be able to tell.....I doubt the .22lr will budge either of them :D
I I'm currently in the tool and die business and the p.f. dowel pin holes we ream are either to size or .001 under, same with th guide pins, sometimes the pin bores are .oo2 under and we put the pins in the freezer. Those dies exert a lot af pressure and the dowles and pins never have a problem moving or coming out...I guess my point is the FSB must be really tight cause I also tried pushing them out on a small hydrolic press. I know if I had a dedicated fixture for holding the upper the press would have worked. I think its more of a job security thing for gunsmiths az they don't want "bubba" working on their rifles and getting hurt? :rolleyes:

I'm often surprised at the number of guys who will slag you for cutting a pinned FSB down while preaching the use of a set-screw or clamp-on block. It's a critical point in the whole AR system and the pinned FSB isn't going to let you down!

I have used clamp blocks with no issues and the set-screw block is fine if the barrel is dimpled.

Tell me true Bulls-I_24, is your barrel a chrome lined 1/9 twist? If not then what? I have a CMMG insert and had trouble with it in a couple other type barrels. They were un-lined though.

Yes it is. Have you tried the heavier 40 grain? The newer gen kits are supposed to cycle subs, I will be trying the CCI subs I have tomorrow, 1050fps 40gr. I would like to try some 60gr subs but dont have any. The 20in 1/12 barrels should group the best but I don't have one to test that theory. What yardage where you sighted at and what distances did you shoot? I think being sighted in at the calibers maximum point blank range would help. Does chrome lined help with accuracy? I thought it was for corrosion resistance? This spring I will definately post some 100yd groups.
