Help on history of this K98

Hey all,

At a local gunshow I picked uo this BYF 43 K98, I posted some photos on another milsurp site but cant get a definitive answer on the history of this rifle.
It has a missing sight hood and cleaning rod aswell as peened waffenampts, however it doesnt have a lot of traits of an RC.

does the bolt and stock match?

No they do not, its a mix master. Someone on another form indicated the style of peening could indicate Czech capture.

I believe I have a virtual duplicate of your rifle... down to the peening. I was told that it was some sort of Izzy. Although the caliber wasn't changed (still 8mm) and no additional markings added. I think it was purchased at a discount sportings good store (Dunhams) but can't recollect.... about 6 years ago......

My problem with that story, is that mine wasn't converted to .308.... is yours? I also don't see a caliber designation burned into the heel of the stock. I am told that many Izzy K98K's were stamped with Hebrew letters...

So I guess the mystery continues, until we get an expert to weigh in!! Thanks for posting yours, since I have pondered the recent origins of mine also!

I believe it is an 8mm still, the tag on it when I bought it was "8x57". The bore is very nice with strong rifling but a .308 projectile will slide right through the barrel and come out the other end by dropping it in, so I am pretty sure it isn't a 7.62 conversion.

This one seems to have a lot of people stumped!

My first thought was Israeli as well. Saw quite a few in the mid-1980s when a whole bunch were imported. The 7,62 conversions were the scarce ones at the time, but they are easier to identify years later.

I have a DOT 43 that is very similar. It is in about the same condition as yours and the waffenampts are peened over (looks like they were done with a rounded center punch). The parts are all matching except for the bolt which has been elctro-pencil marked to match. It has import markings near the muzzle. Salt Flat

Is the H style front band matching the serial of the rifle? I'm just asking, since a laminated stock with a cupped buttplate would be late, while the H front band would be early.

Just checked, no it does not match.

Midmichigun, does yours have any Israeli acceptance marks? I have seen ones with the star of David but this one doesn't seem to have any.

I've never heard of an Isreali 98k with out proof marks.
Your rifle is either a Bulgarian or Rumanian rework. Is there a ser nr stamped verticaly along the butt plate on the left side of the stock?
The milled bands are right for a mid 43 dated rifle, but since it is a mismatched rework it doesn't really make any difference.

No there is no serials on the but/but plate. Bulgarian or Romanian eh? this thing just keeps going for potential former owners. haha

On a side note I took it to the range yesterday and this thing SHOOTS!

Looks like a Romainian capture and import
