Pull throu reamer help / bolt

I bought a pull throu reamer from Pacific T.& G.. I just reamed my first barrel with short head space. took the bolt apart . I reamed till the bolt closed.Cleaned then I check the head space with the Forster Go gauge the bolt did not close ??. I had to rereame a bite more for the bolt to colse on the Go gauge . Do you not have to take the bolt apart ?? . If you don't take the bolt apart the extractor seats on that little bearing on the back of the reamer. Would that not give to much head space. Thanks for any info.

You are correct. You have to strip a bolt to headspace. You cleaned the chamber after reaming didn't you? I know you know this already. You're doing a carbine...correct?

Did the instructions say that reaming until the bare bolt closes (on the reamer) is supposed to give you a nominal headspace? If so, I would think that after your first reaming, the bolt should have closed on the "go" and not closed on the "no-go" - this is a guess from someone who has never done one. - Bob

been thanking about buying one.i have foster,s gauges there cut so you can check head space without taken the bolt apart.to us the reamer have to strip the bolt.so i been told,i used the gauges not the reamer. there a old man at a flea market can tear bolt down, put it back to getter with out the bolt tool i have trouble putting it back to getter with with bolt tool.

Sounds like you did it correctly though gunsdora.

There was no instructions with the reamer. I cleaned with brush then air compressor to take any shavings out but don't know if the shoulder if that what you call it is smooth ( wear the mouth of the brass case sits.?? ).

He seemed to be questioning why the bolt didn't close on the "go" gauge after his initial cut with the reamer. I was just agreeing with him that I thought it should have - also figured he had the full set of gauges and what I would expect when trying the "no-go." I have the Forster guages too, and agree with fungun that it's not necessary to strip the bolt with that brand. - Bob

I am going to play the dumb one here, are you using spring pressure from the slide to ream the headspace?

Yes slide, spring, & stripped bolt .

It all sounds right...if the go gauge works then it has to be. Chuckindenver must be here someplace...I don't know why he hasn't weighed in yet, he's done about a million of these.

Usually there's a removeable bearing that sits on the bolt face end of the reamer. The bearings come in differing thicknesses to achieve the desired results. We usually leave the slide of and use thumb pressure to do the last few thousandths, rotating the bolt closed.

Thanks for the info. Question do I leave the bolt complete or tripped ???. I have the Forster guages. There was no instructions that came with the pull throu reamer.

Definitely stripped if you are using the pull-through reamers of which I'm familiar. The headspace setting "donuts" don't have cutouts. If your reamer is recessed at the back and has a square shoulder it's likely you are missing that spacer.

That's it. Definitely done with the bolt apart.

Does Pacific offer their own headspace gage?

Alternatively, can you check the Clymer gage?

Chamber was for sure clean?

Will the bolt close easily on a max length cartridge case?

Will have to check with Pacific to see if they have there own gages. Cleaning after reaming I use a wier chamber bruch then a air hose . I don't know if that get all of the shavings out ??. What do you use .

Will also try what you said take the slide off after the bolt fall & do the rest by hand.

I just used a brush and several cleaning cloths to clean the chamber...the shavings aren't hard to get out.

Not a gunsmith .... but .....if the reamers could be counted on , why would they even make a "go" ?

Never count on uncalibrated equipment. And even calibrated equipment must be recertified on a periodic basis. Even gages get checked when they're in either a production or maintenance organization.
