Alright, just kidding. I bought this T99 barreled action at a gunshow 15 or so years ago and forgot about it. I have a sporter stock that I cut a long time ago too that I also forgot about. Well now is the time to get this project finished. Ok, this may be the first and last time I'll mention this abomination.
It's not much good for anything else at this point, so why not? It takes some additional work, but they can be made into fairly attractive hunting rifles. Far better than making a tomato stake out of the barreled action.

Early Winchester 220 Swift barrel on a Type 38. Bishop stock, IIRC.
This one was given to me, minus the scope and mount and a LOT of fine tuning! Would like to find another shorter scope but the eyepiece of this early Weaver is unusually small, yet it barely clears the bolt handle. So it'll probably have to a similar vintage without the Litchert front end.
Thanks jmoore, I've been looking for other sporters to study. Others also mention how even a turned down bolt will not clear the scope. I may have to sweep the bolt down , backwards and then curve outwards, safari style. Considering a no weld type extension.
Get it welded. Might as well make a nice job of it. IIRC, we picked through several bolts, mostly previously modified, before settling on the one used in the rifle now. Had a friend, who was primarily a benchrest rifle builder, do the job to the handle.

The Type 99 is a little easier as the RH rear of the receiver isn't as tall, thus the bottom root area of the turned down bolt isn't as apt to crash.
ETA: The Griffin & Howe scope mount was selected partly because the mum on the receiver was still intact. Seemed a shame to cover it.

bent bolts are an interest of mine. i have a type 2 paratroop rifle in excellent and full matching condition. However the bolt handle is bent down. I acquired this rifle 30 years ago and have not been able to determine who did it. us or the Japanese. anybody else have, or seen one?
Thanks again jmoore for the great photos. I have an old set of scope mount (discontinued make) that I will put on first, then see what I need to do with the bolt. Will post the end result here when done.

Arado, I haven't seen enough T2 rifles to say if your rifle has a factory bent bolt or not. The few I've seen have straight bolts. Maybe somebody else came give some input on this.

One thing that I noted when bedding the stock on mine is that the height of the thing seems a little more than is ideal for a really streamlined job. Considered reducing the magazine capacity by one, cutting the action screws shorter, etc. but the trigger used would then no longer fit.
Have seen some fairly spectacular Arisaka sporters in old issues of The Gun Digest, it might be worth thumbing through some back issues if and when they turn up.
My idea for this sporter seems to be a little different from yours jmoore. I don't want to lower the height, it would make the rifle look too much like a straight stick. I will be following the shape of a H&H Holland safari rifle if I can.
Ordered the Brownells lenard bolt handle yesterday. There is a setback on the scope mount, I opened the package I had it in, and found that I had cut the rail and used part of it in another project. I might go with the weaver universal two piece mount.
OK, I wanted to wait until this rifle was completely finished before posting pictures of it but this thread is perfect for it. This rifle has been assembled from bits and pieces, mostly from gunshows. No collector rifle was harmed.. It is a Type 38 .308 project that won’t go away and doesn’t quite get finished. It made a jump in progress though when I found the Fajen stock at a reccent gunshow . I would not have inlet the tangs but that was already done when I got it. The bolt handle and still needs polishing. The scope mount is a Leupold #55726 Savage 10 RH-SA Round receiver. I trimmed the back end of it off and drilled and counter bored a new rear hole. Also extended the relief area for cartridge clearance. Also the last picture shows 4 different bolt shapes for a T38.

You are way ahead of me with your scope mounted and bolt done. I have to wait for my stuff to come in the mail. At least a week. I ordered a Weaver #70 one piece mount .
Progress so far. Had the day off, so I cut the original bolt knob off and welded a Brownells bolt handle. Five hours of setting up the jigs, welding ,and filing. Next is to put the scope mount on, then glass bed, and finish.
Seabot, That makes a huge difference-- the bolt handle looks good and has just the right angle. It should clear just about any scope with the right rings. Bolt handles always take a lot of time. I always under estimate my gun and car projects by at least 50%.
It is almost finished! Still need a few more coats of Tru Oil. Mounted a Weaver current model K4 scope on extra high rings. Bolt clears scope with room to spare. Will give it a test fire next week at the range.

Salt Flats, thanks for your compliments. I had to wait till today to show some results. Went to the range and fired 19 rounds with this sporter T99. Took 10 rounds to adjust the scope, then 9 rounds at 50 yds for the record. The groups weren't as good as I wanted them to be . My usual loads for T99s are with IMR4064 , and I was out of it, so I made loads using 50.0gr4831/150grSP. I know this rifle is capable of doing better.
The scope mounting turned out to be fairly easy on this T99. I used the gas vent hole for the forward mounting hole, using a 10-32 tap and screw. The rear screw is a 8-40 on the rear bridge. Just a word of advice that the taps should be new and sharp or you will not get a good threading job. The receiver is very hard. Cutting oil is a must and you should reverse the tap often to let out the debris.
Scope height is OK, the stock doesn't need a cheek piece for a comfortable view through the scope.

Since it's been quiet here lately, I thought I could show some of my earlier T99 sporters. And yes, these rifles came to me bubbadized from friends who didn't quite appreciate them as possible hunting rifles. Since I had a stock duplicating/inletting machine at the time, these were the natural outcome.
Now that I got my welder working, hmmm... bolt handles.... and mount more scopes?
