I was going to do a build last year until I received a sales flier from J&G Sales. Decided to just buy it outright, my time is worth more to me than the sale price.
I LOVE mine! It is a BEAST! And will go through ammo faster than I can keep paying for it, but is a GREAT conversation starter at the range. I would recommend buying one instead of the rebuild. Either way I think they are lots of fun.

You convinced me. Arrived today and while an anchor weight wise if it functions properly I think I am in love. Very dinstinctive firearm with a storied history. Very nice addition to my small collection of Finns.
I think I would have lived to regret not getting one while the geting was good.
100% function with 36 round mag and WOLF steel cased ammo. The trigger pull is awful. Going to have to try to make improvements. Terta grease seems to have fixed the rough bolt and charging handle issue which some research indicates is the norm on these conversions. I think it is a keeper. Now off to raid the change bucket for more magazines and perhaps a parts kit for spare parts. Perhaps at some point it may be worth bluing the beast for a more original look.
HoH, Just a quick FYI on those Suomi parts kits! BE CAREFUL, most of them come with the original barrel, I was informed by LE that having a kit with barrel and gun together requires SBR Tax Stamp. The original barrels are under 16" and will work with the manufactured guns, but you need to SBR them to be legal.

Kit and gun together meaning owning both?
What I mean is;
Most kits come with an original Suomi barrel. This barrel is less than 16” in length.
The “semi-auto” modified Suomi that you purchase from J&G Sales etc… can use the same barrel with an extension welded on to make it the legal 16” length, or have a USA manufactured 16” barrel (mine has the USA made barrel). If you look at the picture of my Suomi, the original barrel length would end just past the front sight. The section past the angle cut, is a fauxe compensator, and the barrel or extension is the rest of the projection.
The problem you can run into is from the ATF Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) regulations;
Q: May a FFL or an individual legally possess the parts to manufacture an SBR or SBS as long as no firearms are actually assembled?
A FFL (Type-7 or Type-10) who pays the Special Occupational Tax (SOT) may possess parts required to assemble NFA firearms. A non-licensee or FFL who has not paid the SOT is required to register any NFA firearm via an ATF Form 1 (5320.1) prior to acquisition of the parts required to assemble such firearm. (NOTICE the wording “prior to acquisition of the parts required . . .)

As explained to me by LE and a local NFA dealer; If I were to purchase one of those Suomi parts kits (with the original barrel) and have both the kit and my semi-auto Suomi M31 in my possession at the same time, I would have an illegal SBR and could be charged for it.
There are TWO ways to avoid this;
Get a spare parts kit without the barrel, or immediately get rid of the barrel from the kit you get. OR You can get one of the Suomi M32 pistols that were sold (see link below). They have the original SHORT barrel. If you owned one of these you could have the original barrel from the spare parts kit as a replacement, even if you have one of the M31 rifle versions as well.

Got it. I am only interested in the kit for spare parts and the shroud (mine has no comp). The compensator gives the gun a bit less of an ardvark look. Have you played with your trigger pull? Mine is awful.I need to replace the rear trigger guard screw as mine came butchered and shim the shroud to tighten things up a bit. No regrets with the purchase function is 100% and is quite fun to shoot not to mention the history behind the weapon.
I didn't know they were selling the semi's without the compensator. That must look kind of goofy.
As far as the trigger pull goes, it is a "WORK OUT" to say the least. I haven't measured it, not sure if my Lyman gauge goes that high. I thought it was broken when I first got it until I read reports on line about how hard it was. Mine looks like a sealed unit so I am afraid to mess with it too much. It has gotten lighter, I think, in the last few times I've taken it to the range. When I first took my gun apart (after verifying it was not broken), I soaked the trigger group in a bucket of mineral spirits. After scrubbing as much as I could with brushes, I sprayed a whole can of "Brake Clean" through it. I then PACKED the insides of the group with "yamaha molybdenum disulfide grease". I used one of those plastic dental syringes, all plastic no needle, you can get from health care store or your dentist. For the next week I would just hand cycle the trigger/hammer as I set around watching TV. I then sprayed out the grease with another can of "Brake Clean" and sprayed it, inside and out, with "Rem-oil". This may not have had much luck lightening the trigger pull (it did some), but it did make a BIG difference in the smoothness of the pull. One of these days I will get up enough courage to pull the trigger group apart and try polishing ALL the parts inside.
As a side note, I have noticed that if I apply a liberal amount of the "Moly Grease" around the bolt when I put it back together after cleaning. The next time I go to the range it feels like it shoots smoother. It might be just me, but from the time I charge the first round, every time I pull the charging handle, it just slides smoother. I have even double charged it, thinking that I didn't pull the handle back far enough the first time, only to watch the first round clear the chamber. If you have or do try this, let me know if I am going crazy.
Have fun and post up some pics, I would love to see what yours looks like without that compensator.
Apparently great minds do think alike as I used the Tetra moly liberally on the bolt etc.. to great effect. I shot her a bit today since it was to wet for tractor work. I have not tested the accuracy but boy is it a fun toy. Need more stick mags and a drum to up the fun factor.

That does look strange (bordering on obscene). If I had one like that I would be TEMPTED to pay for the stamp and go ahead and SBR it. You can always temporarily use the LONG barrel on a SBR and put the SHORT barrel back on as long as you have the stamp. When you get a drum, first make sure it is VERY CLEAN & DRY. I have found a “DRY” cleaner/lube like CLP that works for me in my drum magazines. It doesn’t leave that oily film behind to collect in the lowest spot of the magazine, so I can leave my drums loaded up and ready to go. Just for a FYI in case you want to give it a try; “Tec-Shield Elite” ABOUT - TEC SHIELD ELITE - Odorless Cleaner and Lubricant and it has no smell so the wife doesn’t mind my gun cleaning while we watch TV together.
From what I have read most people have problems with drum magazines because they need adjustment. Here are instructions I copied from another forum about how to adjust the spring tension in the drum for proper operation: “If the top round in the drum takes a 'nose dive' and doesn't feed, it usually means the drum spring tension is too weak. To increase the tension of the drum, make sure the drum is empty and the follower is forward all the way at the feed lips' opening. Turn the spring assembly to the left for one or two clicks. Take a screwdriver and remove the screw that holds the cylinder-shaped follower. Making sure the spring tension release button on the back side is away from any surface that might suddenly release the tension while your fingers are inside the drum, carefully turn the spring assembly to the left two full turns, and replace the follower back in the same original position, close to the feed lip opening. Try shooting again with the drum. If feeding problems still exist, repeat the above and retry until correct tension produces flawless feeding.

YES YES YES they are loads of fun! I would recommend getting the prebuilt from J&G Sales, as I have only heard horror stories from people that have tried to build up one of these kits. This is one of those; I don’t really NEED it guns, which does NOT get stuffed in the back of the safe. I take mine out every time I go to the indoor pistol range. I get all kinds of looks from the “Glock” crowd, and that is BEFORE I pull out 3 72 round drums. I have never left without getting some pistol lover hooked on the idea of getting one! Good luck and make sure you post pics when you get one.
