Hi Paul,
Gonna have to beg to differ on this one. I think it's exactly what it says on the tin (if you'll forgive the expression), & I'd very much like it in my collection, but not for the kind of money it is going to make.
Incidentally, both I & a friend have examples of the same scope tin as in this example. Does anyone (JM, Lance, Warren, Paul, Surpmil, Peter????) know who WR/C was? I guess the /C could well indicate 'Canada'.

Thank goodness it's not #270.
And it is a Mk1A, not just a MkI.
Hey JM, if it had been 270 would you just of HAD to buy it?!?

.......there's a certain logic to your argument that appeals to me!

JM...... If I REALLY wanted 270 for my rifle, I'd go and get a clapped out lensless Mk1 cheap (well, certainly a LOT cheaper that the REL one being discussed here.....) plus an old equally clapped No42. Then I'd machine down the No42 tube so as to a) eliminate the original markings and b) bring the main tube to 1.000" diameter.
Then I'd graft the now clear/UNmarked No42 tube to the donor No32 as shown as a repair in recent articles.
THEN go to a good pantograph engraver locally and tell him to mark the new unmarked telescope tube with your new REL markings complete with 270 serial number. After all, that's what they did in 1944!
I appreciate that it ain't the real McCoy and maybe cheating a bit but so long as you are doing it for your own aesthetic reasons and not to sell on at a humungous profit, then what's the problem?
After all, people have been doing it with cars and other things for over 60 years AND doing it to cheat too!
Forgive me if I am missing something here but what is the point in producing a copy marked as the original just for aesthetic reasons the owner would still know it was not "right" and someone further down the line will eventually end up with an "all matching" set up that isn't.
There is so much remarking going on on both repro and genuine items it is becoming very difficult for the ordinary collector to know what they are buying. As far as I am concerened any item that carries "false" markings should also be marked "repro" but that of course will never happen all the time big money can be made especially in the "sniper" field.
Simple.......... Just tell the engraver to mark it mark it 'repro' then!!!!! But it ain't a repro......, it's STILL the real McCoy with a different number. Over to you........
In the words of Muffer regarding another post, "this sort of caper is for those with far too much time on their hands"
Or alternatively, too many telescopes..........
