What do you think of this carbine? Did I do good?

My gf got this from a widow of a Vet. It's similar to one I rebuilt looking at the serial numbers. Serial number is 5432381 with a barrel date of 8-44. Yep late war Inland. I don't have War Baby here but I remember alittle of what to look for and looking at this it looks to be correct except maybe the rear sight. Anyway pictures will tell the story. Sadly I'm using my cell phone so some maybe upside down. Please let me know what do you think. I like it. It's a nice carbine and will be thrilled if not rebuilt.

Rear sight correct. 44 Inland I swapped parts to make correct had a hi rear sight that was cast. This one looks like the stamped rear sight. There again I don't have my books to tell. Everything else looks correct. I like it.

Am I understanding that you replaced a rear sight on this carbine marked PI? If you did, you probably or could have taken the original sight off of it. The sight you took off at least sounds like the milled (not cast) type two adjustable sight. I hope you kept it, you did didn't you? At least post a picture of the sight you took off if you still have it.

Nope I have another 44 Inland with hi marked rear sight. The one in the picture is as found. I haven't replaced anything on it. The other one I got 3 years ago I swapped the wood band and trigger group.

That stamped rear sight is correct for your s/n. The trigger housing looks right too. Only downside I see is the social security numbers are whatever they are. Looks like you did OK! - Bob

One of the numbers looks like a military service number. If it is its a nice score because I can put a face to this carbine. Ill have to research it.

Okay, as usual, I should have gone back and read the thread again. The carbine does look very good. I had a 5.48 Inland with a 9-44 barrel on it. Unlike yours though, it had been rebuilt, but shot wonderfully. As stated above, it's a shame about the numbers on the receiver rails.

Talk about not worrying about identity theft back then. His service number and social security number.

The rear sight on your other carbine is not cast it's machined and it's correct for your other Inland. Both the machined type 2 and the stamped type 3 rear sights were both used at the same time. Your new ones appears to be an original and not rebuilt. It's a good find for sure. Back in the late 60's early 70's putting a SS number was encouraged by the FBI and the police departments to help protect and ID stolen firearms. Back then there was no worry about ID thief. Police departments used to have engravers they would lend out to residents to ID all of their property with their SS number.

Is that a cut-down Type III band? What is that triangle mark?

Didn't some Inland Type IIs have a triangle mark on them? Would type II be correct for that serial number?

The Triangle Logo was the most common of the type two band markings.

Triangle was American Swiss Co.

Sweet, another transitional Carbine. We went for months without a "new find" of an unmessed-with transitional Carbine with type II band and Type II or III sight, and now we have three or four, since my new Winchester is one, too.

I had a few rifles with social security numbers engraved in them from POs who passed away. I still have a number 3 Enfield like that. Like posted this was common practice during the 60 and 70 to do anything of value. I never seen one with service number if that is what the other number is. Doesn't look like a phone number.

Glad the rear sight is correct. I have War Baby but wasn't on me at the time. I knew the barrel band was correct. It's not cut off its made that way. Notice it has a 2 rivet hand guard.

Last all patina is correct. It's dirty and dusty. I need to wipe and oil it to get the dust out. It's a nice carbine. First one I found all correct.
