Picked up a 1903 Springfield SN-1369522 today for $350, front of stock has been cut off and the front handguard is missing but has the original 1930 barrel. Overall in good shape, has not been drilled for scope. Its my first and i'm happy with it.

Check your barrel for the star gage markings and muzzle stamp, would also check SRS for any possible information. Your rifle is easy to restore - how is the bore condition ?

Not listed on SRS, but I agree, a good restoration project in the making.
Barrel is a 4 groove and it is dark, put 5 rounds thru it today at 30 yards and it shot one ragged hole. trigger pull is better than i expected, again i'm impressed with it! couldn't see any star markings on the muzzle, oh well.
Another example that it doesn't take much rifling to direct the bullet correctly. Now time to try it at 100 and see...

Yes i mean you. I was simply stating some facts about the rifle, I shot it off my front porch just to see how it felt and have not had time to go to my range yet and you make it sound like i'm some moron trying to put something over on you guys or that it was'nt worth your time to have to read about how obiviously a rifle can shoot at close range. sorry to all about my rant
Sorry if i'm reading you wrong but i have too many arrogant/sarcastic people i have to deal with on a regular basis. i'm kinda sensitive to it.
Lets see if we can re-state...a rifle that has a bad bore will keyhole at the muzzle. There are those that see rifling leaving the barrel with every shot. When a barrel is dark or eroded, it looses it's appeal and collectors turn up their nose at it. They will still shoot sometimes and yours is one that seems to do well. Lead bullets won't do well(maybe) but jackets are fine. Winchesters and 303s are examples of this. I've had both that were in this position. I had a Krag that had very little left to look at but handled jackets just fine. Many people start at 100 and don't do well but can't figure out why. The place to start was 25 to see where it prints. It gives you a very clear picture of where the fall of shot will be in relation to the vertical line. That is, left, right or on the aiming mark. The other thing I can't see from here is how much rifling is there, you say dark. That could be an almost new barrel that has been allowed to fur up and then was cleaned. Most of the time it means a less than stellar barrel. This is what I was thinking in your case, but again jackets seem to be fine. I'm hoping once you have a chance to print at 100 you'll come back and confirm my suspicions.
Lastly, I think you'll find the advisory staff and mods here are not really sarcastic or inflammatory. Some really have a great deal of knowledge and have been involved with this exact sort of thing for their whole lives...

Over the last year or so that I have been dropping in and out of here I have found most members helpful friendly (to a point) and very informative and for the most part willing to share that information. I have seen a few get a tad testy when some question keep coming back to haunt them which seems to happen every 6 months or less and they seem to forget that there are newbies coming in country all the time. Some of the salts have been answering those same questions for eons and the newbies need to get their newbie cards punched. Hang in there guys on both sides and 10 years down the line if we still have the right to keep and bear arms and the internet that newbie today will probably roll his eyes when THAT question is asked again. :beerchug:
