I'm hoping that all of you experts out there can come to my assistance........
I recently sold a No32 scope tin on 'that' auction site and have just received a message from the buyer complaining that the thread in the front scope mounting in the tin is stripped, and as a consequence the tin is damaged and not as listed.
I'm sure that me telling him that they are supposed to be like this will not be enough so.........

Tell him that Peter Laidler told you that it SHOULD be missing the front thread! Originally the tins were made with BOTH spigots threaded but if the bracket was slightly out or some other mishap prevented the thumbscrew threads engaging, then the whole tin was unserviceable. SO guess what they did? Yep. bored out the front thumbscrew thread!
Looking at the front of the tin (latch side) the spigot on the left is bored out smooth and the one on the right is drilled and tapper 1/4" BSF. Same on my No4 T's and L42. Ron
I have three tins. One has the left spigot bored out, one has it removed completely and one is complete and threaded.
This is interesting as i have just bought a repro tin from Numrich for my original No32 Mark II as I wanted to protect the scope as much as anything else. The Front spigot is slightly out of alignment and I was about to try and 'Bend it to Fit' but may now just drill it out.
This thread spurred me to check a quick 'straw poll' of a dozen tins earlier this evening. Half were modified & half weren't! Don't know how representative this is of practice generally, but I suspect that both variants are common enough..........

The buyer has now accepted that the tin is exactly as it should be
In fact we used to drill out any threaded front spigots that we'd find!
I don't think I've ever run across a tin with two threaded attaching points! There's six (?) at the house now, and all are threaded only on the right side.
I have a tin that has 2 threaded attachment points with the scope screwing to both, is this a mod of some description. It has Case,STG.TEL

Certainly stamped correctly and looks right with the original adjustment tool in the lid too, no worries IMHO.

Originally they were ALL threaded in both pillars. But due to slight discrepancies and some brackets not fitting there was a misc instruction (EMER Inst and SL's V-something or other as I recall) that only the rear pillar should be threaded. This was because if you left only the front pillar threaded, it would bring the scope rearwards a tad - where the eye cap would foul the end of the case.
Once again the true worth of the halls of knowledge have saved the day and given the uninformed the information to set the record straight thank you once again Peter. :thup:
