Lithgow Small Arms Factory gun rack

Hi all,

I pick up an original Lithgow Small Arms Factory gun rack today, I thought those of you that have not seen one might like to have a look at a bit of Australian small arms history.

First photo is it empty of course. In the second photo I partially filled it it with a selection of my Lithgow's and a Long Branch No 4 mk 1 and a BSA .22 trainer. It holds 20 rifles in total.

I know another member has one that has been restored unsure yet if I will restore it or leave it as is.

We were still using racks identical to this in our big workshops until I last saw them last August or so. Absolutely identical. Maybe there was a set pattern. Now used for GPMG's et-al. Even still in the yellow colour

I would say its more than partially filled in photo 2, nice collection.

All of the rifles except for two are Lithgow's. The Lithgow actions are dated 1916, 1919, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1935 x 2, 1936, 1937, 1940, 1942 and 1953.

Fantastic rack and collection. Great piece of unique history.

Reckon I would leave the rack as is, that's how it left the factory, so to speak.

I think I will leave it as is. Even if I wanted to restore it, I don't have the time at the moment to do a proper job on it.

Sorry mate, you lot already have enough of our Lithgow stuff across the ditch so I think I will hang onto this. :D

He has more lithgow SLRs than Lithgow.:D At least he is allowed to have them;) so i might just might let him escape with one just one rack:thup: he cant have any of our RACKS.:super:

I saw one of the 20 .303/SLR Rifle cabinets up for auction on ebay by a guy in Queensland, problem is it was pickup only. I would of needed a pallet and a freight company to get it back over here. But it would of made a nice conversation piece..... maybe in the lounge and turn it into a drinks cabinet :madsmile:

Bind2 are you coming over for the auction?

I have been offered a lockable Australian Army SLR rifle cabinet for free, all I have to do is pick it up. Trouble is it's big and very heavy.

I scored one of those "convertible" L1A1 / SMLE boxes a decade or so back. "Bronze green" on the inside, "Olive drab" on the outside; a real bit of history.

Very handy in the workshop: you can bolt them to the wall and keep the "toys" secured in between bouts of work.

I can still remember loading heaps of them, FULL of L1A1s onto the back of the old International F-1, 6 x 6 trucks before we headed off to fun placed like Tin Can Bay or Shoalwater.

And then we got the "Tupperware rifles"...........

Muff there is a slight difference between one rack and our RACKS.

You don't need to stir about racks, I married one(WRAAC) and her rack wasn't bad either.........bit different now, something to do with gravity they say.:beerchug:
