I know there have been many posts on this elusive item and where it originated from, but attached is a scan from the 1968 User Handbook for the Gun, 84mm, INF, ATK, L14A1 (Carl Gustav or Charlie G to you and me) that shows the bottle as housing the pullthrough for the sub calibre attachment.
We know all this Waco, I explained it all years ago! That's why it has an M3- VAOS part number and is called a Container pullthrough in the L42 CES when it actually holds a lens brush! They were made by a small now long out of business small plastics company from Brighton too. Next question............

I just picked up a group of oil bottles with the double plastic bottle for oil & cleaning brush shown in that photo, was just after the Lee Enfield oiler that was in with them.
Paid $30NZ for the lot, which is about the going rate for a Lee oiler in NZ

Hi 5th has your email box melted yet, that is a good buy and by the No in that picture NZ may have captured the supply and market.
But they ain't the right ones Bindi! The L42 one is a SINGLE bottle with a loop for the chain attached to the bottle and the --8021 part number. Those have the chain attached to both caps, through a hole in the centre bar to avoid loss.
The L42 ones were pretty vulnerable in the chest because unless it was positiioned correctly, as soon as you closed the lid of the chest, it'd crush the container against the butt and smash it. Additionally, when they were left out/open, the bottles used to 'yellow' due to the old plasticiser de-whatever-it-does, becoming brittle and breaking anyway after a few years. So if you've got one, keep it out of bright sunlight. Mind you, there's not a lot of that in England at the moment. Bright sunlight OR those bottles!

I've never seen one like that orange one in my life if you want the real truth CZ and never, ever, never seen a label as clean and clear and with that printing on it either. But like I say, I could be wrong! Now you're thinking what I'm thinking. They used to 'yellow' ands go brittlke but never saw one 'orange' and to be fair, I've seen a few. The top, clear on is definately the real McCoy and is identical and marked identically to those I had in my drawer at work except that they were also in sealed packages of 10

included some pictures of a brush prior to trimming. The brush with the white bristles is a do it yourself job until gear can be located.
Initially reading about your brush trimming escapade got me going all of a dither there to start with.........
Seeing that odd yellow one among some perfect ones leads me to think that someones had the labels reproduced to add some 'authenticity' to them. I say that because when I look through the poly bag here, at least three don't have labels on them. However, one of the label-less bottles does have a tie-on AFG-8061 label (that's the Ordnance Stores VAOS label). The norm, label/script wise was as shown in your previous photos and the dot-matrix printing (photo 7 above)
The trouble with these bottles is like the IWS brackets (and to a lesser extent, No42/53 telescopes). At some point it becomes viable to have them made. As soon as they are available and pretty-well perfected, the real ones sort of loose their value. Like No42/53 scopes. A bit of a shortage, albeit just spare parts to me, but I have a feeling in my bones that a lot will soon swamp the market. If I was a betting man I wouldn't be paying daylight robbery prices for them now......
With all due respect, I am not sure what “escapade” you are referring to. There is a picture of brush as found uncut(and will remain so) the other is from an L42A1 or IWS kit IIRC, as is.
I was clear had I made one to use that is nothing close in appearance(with "white bristles") to use in the care and maintenance of the L42s I have
As for the containers I will attempt to see if there is a common denominator in their history.

Jeeeees, even got the sub-cal adaptor too! Got the re-cocking tool for it? Are you aware that as originally designed there was a 'blank' that fitted inbto the rear of the sub-calibre 'breech block' facing rearwards. So that when you fired the little sub-cal round down the range, a blast came out of the venturi to simulate the real thing.
We didn't take this idea on but I did used to see breech blocks with the 'blank' cartridge seating still in place but the secondary striker was always cut short. Bye......, they didn't half make a monster loud bang/crack when they went off. The real thing I mean......., especially the first time, after you were used to the sedate and almost gentlemanly 3.5 M20 Rocket Launcher

I understand exactly what you're saying about the plastic container and the tooling now that the Brighton manufacture has gone. Re the IWS brackets, I tested one of the repops on an L42 with IIW on the range at Warminster and it was absolutely perfect. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I couldn't tell the difference once it'd gone to workshops and been phosphated and painted with a load of other stuff. Mind you, being reproduced using the original ITDU drawings helped I suppose.
Roger that regard the IWS bracket Peter. I have one of the forum members repops and when held in the hand next to my original bracket they are identical with comparable weight also. Very small details gives it away when sitting next to an original such as the contact points are painted, the machine finish is visible and one of the internal corners has a slight radius. All in all its a superb quality reproduction which apart from looking pretty in the chest also does its job.
He's also very pleasant to deal with........

Be very aware that repops of these are trickling onto the market as we speak. And if I might be so bold as to say, I haven't ever seen one as bright and shiny as this one, not even straight from Ordnance!
These containers came out directly from Austrian surplus. Originally used for the pulltrough of the subcaliber device of the Carl Gustav.
If that's right, then that should be good enough for anyone. But they have certainly aged well. VERY well in fact
Hope people don't get stung here on either item, they look really to new for me on reflection, and if the bottle had been used operationally at all, it picks up stains that you can't hide or get rid of.

Sooooooo much negativity! I have a Container Pullthrough which is as minty as the day it was made and I know with certainty its route out of the military. The bottle in question came from a certain RAF establishment in southeast England in 1989 and has been wrapped in plastic and housed in a box for the last twenty odd years and is clear and bright as the day it came out of the mould!
Probably the only exception then.....a brand spanking new one. Not intended to be negative, just wary!! Look what the chinese have done with the Rolls Royce copy ha ha!!
Good luck if you are the seller, pushing the price of the L42 CES up each day, can't be all bad
I was just about to echo Gils comments when they came up. You can smell mine as soon as you open up the box! S---house in a heatwave springs to mind! Or it WOULD have done if I was still a soldier! But now that I'm a civilian............
Out of the wrap, opened one and it smells awful like cat sh*t!!
Sat in that box in plastic wrap for the last 20 or more years.
I have two with my L42’s, one came as part of a well used and hard life. The other was well out of stores…I concur the smell of an original; out of stores is well an acquired taste!! Once you remove the lid, and smell you put it right back again!!

Thought I would show how long it takes to fake a bottle and an off the shelve small brush and a bit of yellow shrink wrap to complete your CES. 20 minutes tops with the help of some chain from my hanging basket as used in the original cost 25p..............orders???? You have to agree its better than £700+ pounds ha ha!!
If I had used my wife's blusher brush you would have thought it was the original.............it is a Sunday afterall, and there's no Rugby on the box
All that's missing is the empty cereal box and some sticky back plastic:lol:
Don't take this the wrong way old bean but whilst I won't be spending £700 on the genuine article I think I'll pass on the repro too.
That said, list on Flea-bay with the right story and buzz words and you'll make a killing:madsmile:
Ha ha.........just goes to show its only a piece of wood, chain and plastic, and well over priced. Makes you wonder what an L42 CES sold off in bits would make on a good day. Probably twice what its worth
